Rain is hitting 2-for-3 on the spring season, while USF football is 1-for-3. Bad weather in the Tampa Bay area forced the Bulls to cancel the second practice in three days and means an early exit for spring break. USF will not be back on the field until March 18. They will have 25 days to complete 13 practices before the Spring Game on April 12 at Raymond James Stadium at 7 p.m.
While many of the current student athletes will be heading out of town for spring break, the coaches and several former players will be on campus for USF's
annual Pro Day on Friday. Assistant Athletics Director and strength coach Ronnie McKeefery is expecting scouts from all 30 NFL teams and thee head coaches to be in attendance. GoUSFBulls.com will have exclusive coverage and photos, plus all the official numbers online after the event.
Right now the plan is for Trae Williams to run and do position drills, possibly the vertical and broad jump. Mike Jenkins will not do any of the running tests (he ran a 4.38 at NFL combine) but will do position drills. The word, although not confirmed to GoUSFBulls.com, is that Ben Moffitt will run and do drills.
The latest list of players that plan to workout: Jared Carnes, Richard Clebert, Courtney Denson, Woody George, Amarri Jackson, Jenkins, Moffitt, Sam Miller, Walt Walker and Williams.
As for current players, one of the most interesting position battles is at middle linebacker where sophomore Alonzo McQueen and juco-transfer Kion Wilson are battling to replace Moffitt. Both are from Jacksonville and were well aware of each other in high school. Both players graduated in 2005 - Wilson at Raines HS and McQueen at Lee HS - and were competing for bragging rights as the top LB in the area. They also went head-to-head in throwing events during track season. To learn more about both players and the friendly rivalry, click on the videos below...

The national coverage of spring football is in full gear and The Sporting News gave some pub to corners Jerome Murphy and Tyller Roberts, who are atop the depth chart to replace Jenkins and Williams. TSN also has a short preview of USF's Pro Day.
We have some more weight room numbers to pass along. The football team has a competition between the offense and defense, as well as individually for the top performance during each conditioning season. The point system includes weight lifted, improvement and overall effort. The defense outpointed the offense with an average of 122.8 to 113.5.
The top three performers on defense for the winter were Tyrone McKenzie with 177 points and well ahead of Danny Verpaele (140) and Jarriett Buie (137). On offense the top three wouldn't be quite as easy to predict. Quarterback Grant Gregory led the offense and came in second overall with 167, while kicker Ilia Petrov was second with 163 and followed by Ben Williams at 133.
Petrov is sophomore that is yet to see significant game action, but the coaches have to love his intensity in the weight room. The strength coaches do. They highlighted his performance above the rest when communicating the results to GoUSFBulls.com.
That's it for numbers today. We'll have all-time lifting records and a few other side stories before spring ball concludes.
Another player that has switched sides of the ball is Sampson Genus, who moved from the offensive line to defensive tackle. USF defensive coordinator Wally Burnham thinks he has the potential to be a key contributor in the middle and will give him plenty of reps at the position this spring.
On the walk-on front, USF has five additions on the current spring roster. The walk-ons are RB Joel Miller (Wharton HS), WR Jeffrey Wilson (Everglades HS), DB Lonnie Oxendine, DE Rony Delisca and former juco RB and current DE Dominique Rocker.
Rocker (6-2, 235) was recruited by USF out of Taveres high school before signing with Iowa State and ending up at Garden City Community College, where he redshirted in 2005 and was injured in 2006. He received his AA degree in 2007 and relocated to Florida. "He's a big old boy," said running backs coach Carl Franks, which is why he will begin his career providing depth on the d-line.
