| Marcela Gurgel 2008 Season Notes |
|
Gurgel is the only player in the NCAA Division I to be ranked in the top 10 of two different major categories. As of the national statistics through Oct. 12, Gurgel is eighth in kills per set (4.53) and fifth in aces per set (0.61). Although just midway through her junior season, Gurgel already ranks seventh all-time in USF history in kills with 1280. In the all-time school charts, Gurgel has moved up to fifth place with 171 career service aces. Gurgel posted a season-high 16 digs in a double-double effort along with 20 kills against DePaul. Both of those statistics were match-highs. Gurgel enjoyed an incredible weekend at the Crimson Tide Invitational where she tallied at least 19 kills in each of the three matches. Against Murray State in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Gurgel matched a career-high with 26 kills in the match. The most impressive part of the feat was due to the match only going three sets. Gurgel posted eight kills in each of the first two sets and then 10 in the third and final set. During the Seattle match, Gurgel hit the 50 mark for a career milestone. It was the 50th time she has connected on 10 or more kills in a match. Gurgel led her team to a perfect 3-0 record at the USF Invitational with a three match total of 36 kills, 15 aces, 12 digs and a .416 hitting percentage. Gurgel's impressive numbers earned the junior outside hitter the MVP of the Invitational. |
