TAMPA - Senior Marcela Gurgel posted a team-high 14 kills on a .448 attack percentage as the University of South Florida volleyball team dispatched Georgetown, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST match at The Corral.
USF (12-6, 5-3 BIG EAST) pulled away midway through the first set to win, 25-19, and led the entire second set in cruising to a 25-20 win. The Hoyas (11-14, 1-8 BIG EAST) got close late in the third, but the Bulls again led throughout the entire set in a 25-22 win.
Gurgel added eight digs and three blocks, and junior Mariana Thon handed out 25 assists. Freshman transfer Janice Rivera had a match-high 17 digs, while senior Alli Arbogast posted a match-high seven blocks.
Vanessa Dorismond had 14 kills and Ashley Malone had a match-high 33 assists for Georgetown. USF stayed perfect against the Hoyas in their all-time series, as the Bulls boast a 9-0 record against Georgetown.
The Bulls rallied from an early 2-0 deficit in the first set, but were unable to build more than a one-point lead, as Georgetown eventually got its two-point lead back at 11-9 on an attack error by Gurgel. Senior Jarka Havlickova threw down a kill to tie it up at 13-13, and after several more back-and-forth plays, USF went up by two on a kill by senior transfer Pamela Luiz.
After a Georgetown timeout, USF won its fifth-straight point on a kill by junior Allie Boaz to make it 20-16. Boaz knocked home another kill and a bad set on Georgetown's Tory Rezin ended the first set, 25-19.
The Bulls jumped out to a 10-5 lead to begin the second set, as a kill by redshirt freshman Caitlyn Breen finally forced Georgetown to call a timeout down by five. Two straight attack errors by the Hoyas got the lead to seven at 13-6, before Georgetown trimmed the lead to four at 13-9 on a kill by Dorismond.
Georgetown was unable to get any closer as play continued, with Havlickova putting down another kill that had Georgetown calling a timeout down 20-14. The Hoyas responded, taking four straight points to cut the lead to two at 22-20.
After Lessinger called a timeout, Gurgel added two straight kills, her fifth and sixth of the set, before teaming with Arbogast to block a Dorismond attack for the 25-20 win.
Much like the second set, USF opened an early lead in the third set before having to hold off a Georgetown rally late. Boaz posted four kills within a seven-serve span that helped the Bulls eventually get up by six at 9-3. After Arbogast and Havlickova blocked back-to-back attacks to make it 12-5, the Hoyas called a timeout.
Georgetown trimmed the lead down to four at 12-8, but USF would hold back any rally. Arbogast and freshman Maija Strazdina blocked an attack by Georgetown - Strazdina's first collegiate block - to get the lead back to seven at 19-12.
After the Hoyas called another timeout, Georgetown slowly got closer, scoring six of eight points late in the match to put the pressure on USF, 24-22. Lessinger immediately called a timeout, but a service error on Georgetown's part ended the set, 25-22.
USF will make an immediate turnaround and host St. John's Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Rec Center, located just north of The Corral, in a match that was cancelled on Oct. 4 after The Corral lost power. The match will begin with USF up, 3-1, in the first set.
