TAMPA - With a spot in the 2009 BIG EAST tournament already in their back pocket, the University of South Florida women's soccer team was not able to complete its comeback in a 3-2 loss to Syracuse on Sunday afternoon.
A pair of second half goals from sophomore
Chelsea Klotz and junior
Angelique Waller were not enough for USF as the Bulls erased an early 2-0 deficit, before yielding the game winner in the 81
st minute of play.
After spotting the Orange a 2-0 lead, the Bulls would finally get things rolling on the offensive attack as Klotz cut the Orange lead in half by notching her team-leading eighth goal at 64:00 minute mark off a feed from fellow sophomore Noelle Pineiro.
With the Orange lead just one, the Bulls kept the offensive pressure on the Orange and delivered the equalizer at 76:02.
This time it was Waller coming up from her defensive position to head in a corner kick from Pineiro. The goal was the first of Waller's career. Pineiro's fifth and sixth assists of the season tied her for the most on the team with freshman
Taylor Patterson.
After battling back the Bulls were unable to take a lead despite a few solid chances.
The Orange take advantage of a lapse in the Bulls defense as Tina Romagnaoulo registered the eventual game winner. The goal was her team leading ninth goal of the season and the second of the game for the freshman.
USF was the more aggressive team in the stat column out-shooting the Orange 13-10, putting more shots on goal and tallying more corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper
Mallori Lofton-Malachi made three saves on the afternoon, but surrendered three goals including a penalty kick in the opening minutes of the second half.
Despite the loss, the Bulls still have plenty to play for. The Bulls gained a No. 4 seed and will now host No. 5-seed DePaul of the National Division on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at USF Soccer Stadium
USF returns to the postseason for the first time since 2007 and will look for its first ever win in BIG EAST tournament play.
The Bulls finish the regular season 8-7-3 and 5-4-2 on the season. Their winning conference record is the first since joining the BIG EAST.
