GAINESVILLE ? The University of South Florida softball team (12-7 overall) defeated the University of Pacific, 5-3 in the second day of the Cox Invitational in Gainesville.
“I left today up to my assistant coaches,” said USF softball head coach Ken Eriksen. “They got on their butts in game one and our team responded and I think I'll keep them.”
After being shutout earlier in the day by Illinois, the Bulls brought the bats against Pacific recording 11 hits and scoring five runs.
The Bulls would get out of a jam in the first inning with the bases loaded and nobody out when sophomore Kendall Arnold would take care of three back-to-back-to-back balls to get out of the inning with no damage done.
The Bulls would put the first run on the board on a Melissa Rosas RBI single. After back-to-back singles by senior Caitlin Schneider and freshman Gina Kafalas, Rosas drove the ball to right field, allowing Schneider to score. After freshman Laura Fountain advanced the runners on a bunt single to load the bases, freshman Janine Richardson would earn a base on balls to push Kafalas home. The Bulls' fifth hit of the inning came from Ashley Bullion and put the lead at 3-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, Pacific would push two runs on four hits to cut the Bulls lead to one.
In the sixth, the Tigers would even up the score on an unearned run, but the Bulls wouldn't be deterred.
In the top of the 7th inning, Bullion plated her second and third RBI with a triple to right center that plated Fountain and Kafalas and secured the win for the Bulls.
The Crystal River, Fla. native led the Bulls with three hits, three RBI's and her second career triple.
“I was just trying to hit the ball on the screws,” said Bullion. “We are starting to work well as a team and starting to get on base. It was my job to get those runners home.”
Junior Kristen Gordon entered the game in the bottom of the third tossing 4.1 innings, striking out five and allowing no earned runs.
“It's easier to stay focused when your whole team is behind you and working hard,” said Gordon. “It's easy for me to do my job and work hard.”
The Bulls will take on the No. 2 University of Florida Gators in the final game of the Cox Invitational at 2:30 p.m., Sunday.
