USF vs.WVU
Post Game Quotes
March 1, 2009
USF Sun Dome - Tampa, Fla.
Head Coach Stan Heath
On his technical foul:
“I wasn't trying to get one; I just felt there was a huge disparity. One time that I remember it was 10-1 and there was a sequence in there where we had the ball in close and to put one thing on the other looking at stats I see 10-1 then I see us around the basket three times and nothing being called. I got a little frustrated.”
On the mindset in playing out the last week:
“I'm not really trying to position, we're just trying to get wins, we're just trying to find a way to get some wins and it isn't easy. We're short handed and we've got guys that are playing a lot out there, we're just trying to get wins ? it isn't a seeding thing or anything else, we're just trying to get wins.”
On not having Jesus Verdejo:
“It is huge ? you're looking at potentially three starters that aren't playing for us right now. Marquette just lost a key player and everybody is hurting and banged up but that is a huge number. All of a sudden you challenge for the league championship ? it certainly makes a difference in how fresh these guys are at the end of the game. If one guy doesn't have his A game on then there is somebody else who can pick up the slack. I look at West Virginia and Da'Sean Butler we held him to 3-10, that is a pretty good job and in the first half we did a phenomenal job on Alex (Ruoff) he got going in the second half because he is a good player but to have five guys in double figures when they only have nine, that is a pretty balanced attack and they have a great formula for success. Unfortunately we're not at that stage and we're counting on (Dominique Jones) to try and get 30 and (Chris Howard) to get double-doubles, then we're hoping our freshman can have a big game. Every game we have to have those same kind of numbers and it's hard.”
On offensive rebounding:
“We just had a game where we dominated the glass and we should be building off of that. They fought really hard on the glass and it is as hard a team to matchup as anybody. They're just across the board the same height, they switch everything and every player has great strength. They have strong built guys that you can tell have been in the weight room doing push-ups or something. Even our younger big guys had a difficult time just posting them up because they would start getting into their legs and just pushing them around. It is a seasoned savvy team right there that is going to do very well in the tournament.”
West Virginia Head Coach Bob Huggins
On offensive rebounding:
“Offensive rebounding has been huge for us all year, we're not very big but we're long and because of the way we play offensively we try to get people spread where we can just hopefully out quick and out length people to the ball.”
On Alex Ruoff:
“(South Florida) did a good job on him, they really did a good job on him. We ran some sets in the second half to make sure that he had it where he could do something with it. We were just running motion early and they did a really good job on him.”
On how WVU responded in the second half:
“I thought we came out and executed a little bit better. We spent two days of prep knowing they were going to slip screens and we let them slip screens. I thought we did a better job in the second half of not letting them slip those screens.”
On defending USF:
“They're hard to defend anytime because (Dominique) Jones is so good and he puts so much pressure on your defense. (Jesus) Verdejo is a heck of a player, they lost another guy ? you give Stan those guys and they're really hard to defend because Jones can get those other guys pretty good looks and those other guys are very capable of making those shots.”
