Coaching Staff Complete

USF head coach Jim Leavitt announced the hiring of David Blackwell to the position of co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

“We are going to get him going immediately,” said Leavitt. “He is a great addition to our staff.  He has a proven track record on the field and in recruiting. I have tremendous confidence in the assets he will bring to this program.”

Blackwell just completed his sixth season coaching linebackers at Clemson.

He was a part of the Tigers' defensive resurgence in recent years. Clemson was bowl eligible in all six of Blackwell's seasons on staff and most recently, he helped lead the Tigers to the Gator Bowl.  Clemson finished in the top 25 of both polls in three of those seasons.

Practice Report
Newly hired co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach David Blackwell jumped right into spring practice just hours after accepting the position and seemed like he had been her for five years, not five hours.

After a few minutes of observations of Coach Leavitt getting some indivual drills started up with the linbackers, Blackwell was in the mix coaching up his bunch.

Here are some initial reactions on Coach Blackwell...
Junior Linebacker Sabbath Joseph
“Coach Blackwell seems like a pretty good guy, he has a good background and coming from Clemson, he has coached a lot of good linebackers up there that play in the NFL.”

Co-Defensive Coordinator Coach Tresey on David Blackwell
“We're extremely excited, Coach Leavitt wanted to make sure this was the right hire for us and that it was the right fit. We feel really good about him, he is very familiar with what we are doing defensively because he's done some things in the past that are very familiar. He is a very good fundamental coach; he is very fundamentally sound and is a good recruiter. I think he will fit great with our entire staff and with the defensive staff.”

Five Player Insights
In our coverage of Spring Ball, one of the regular features will be Five Player Insights, where GoUSFBulls.com staff will sit down with assistant coaches and get their insights on individual players. We are asking the position coaches to tell us what the player is working on during March and April, where he already stands out and where he fits in at his position.

To kickoff the re-occuring feature, we sat down with defensive line coach Kevin Patrick. Here is his take:

Coach Patrick's Insights on Cory Grissom:
“Cory is a big body guy that has a lot of tools. We are trying to refine those skills and get him to develop at least three moves: one pass, one speed rush, one good power rush and counters on each.  One of his focuses this spring is to work on his lowering his pad level and coming off on the ball to be a dominant force at nose, especially in the run game.  We really want Cory to provide us with a solid, reliable two-deep at nose tackle this spring.”

Coach Patrick's Insights on Craig Marshall:
Craig Marshall has an opportunity, like everyone on our defensive line.  Even George Selvie knows this... Everyone's job is up for grabs on every single snap.  Even though Marshall is slotted at the No. 1 left end, we see it as first guy in and then the second guy. We have to be able to rotate players without any drop in production.  We are counting on Craig to develop into an-every down player, someone that can be a force in running and passing situations.  We need Craig to take it to another level and develop more strength this off-season and convert that over to the field.  Learn to play lower and with better leverage.  He is a tremendous pass rusher, but he needs to develop into an every down guy that is tremendous against the run as well.”

Coach Patrick's Insights on David Bedford:
David Bedford is working to develop more confidence in his knowledge of the game.    He has a ton of tools and a tremendous get-off.  He is really working to hone his skills.  He has a tremendous physique, long arms and everything you are looking for in a d-lineman, especially a defensive end.  He needs to push to not only be the first guy in the game, but the guy that can help in a rotation at the multiple positions.  We expect him to contribute (in games) much more come the fall.”

Coach Patrick's Insights on Keith McCaskill:
“Mr. McCaskill is guy with a ton of tools.  He has some really long arms.  He pushes George Selvie in terms of being the quickest off-the-ball... as well as Bedford.  He needs to continually develop and be more consistent in his play. His focuses this spring are playing at a lower pad level, using his face-in- his-hands and using more leverage.  We know that we can move Keith around inside.  He is one of our best movers when we stunt, mix and blitz.  He has a tremendous upside that has all of us excited.  I hope he continues to develop at the rate that he has at the three-technique.  Even from winter to spring, you can see where his strength, confidence have improved.  It has enabled us to have a strong two-deep on the inside.  He got after it in the weight room this winter.  He stands about 6-1 but his arms are the length of a guy that stands 6-5.  We have to teach him to use those from the ground up, couple that with his quick get-off so that he can defeat blocks more consistently.  He can be a great player for us.”

Coach Patrick's Insights on Aaron Harris:
“Nobody is more knowledgeable about the defensive game that Aaron Harris.  Even with the new package we have put in, he is still that guy. He is someone that we can move around a bit because he is capable of learning every position.  He has all the tools and it is remarkable because he isn't our heaviest in terms of weight.  One of his focuses this spring, just like everyone, is learning how to play with his face-in-his-hands and at full tint on every snap, every down and in every situation.  He's the same as many of these guys, leverage and low pad level are very important.  He can really capitalize on those tools and blow up in terms of production.  Aaron is also a leader now.  He is working on that, like man of the seniors, and he is someone our team will look to during the off-season and next fall.”
