Coaching Staff Complete USF head coach Jim Leavitt announced the hiring of David Blackwell to the position of co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
“We are going to get him going immediately,” said Leavitt. “He is a great addition to our staff. He has a proven track record on the field and in recruiting. I have tremendous confidence in the assets he will bring to this program.”
Blackwell just completed his sixth season coaching linebackers at Clemson.
He was a part of the Tigers' defensive resurgence in recent years. Clemson was bowl eligible in all six of Blackwell's seasons on staff and most recently, he helped lead the Tigers to the Gator Bowl. Clemson finished in the top 25 of both polls in three of those seasons.

Practice Report Newly hired co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach David Blackwell jumped right into spring practice just hours after accepting the position and seemed like he had been her for five years, not five hours.
After a few minutes of observations of Coach Leavitt getting some indivual drills started up with the linbackers, Blackwell was in the mix coaching up his bunch.
Here are some initial reactions on Coach Blackwell... Junior Linebacker Sabbath Joseph “Coach Blackwell seems like a pretty good guy, he has a good background and coming from Clemson, he has coached a lot of good linebackers up there that play in the NFL.”
Co-Defensive Coordinator Coach Tresey on David Blackwell “We're extremely excited, Coach Leavitt wanted to make sure this was the right hire for us and that it was the right fit. We feel really good about him, he is very familiar with what we are doing defensively because he's done some things in the past that are very familiar. He is a very good fundamental coach; he is very fundamentally sound and is a good recruiter. I think he will fit great with our entire staff and with the defensive staff.”
Five Player Insights In our coverage of Spring Ball, one of the regular features will be Five Player Insights, where GoUSFBulls.com staff will sit down with assistant coaches and get their insights on individual players. We are asking the position coaches to tell us what the player is working on during March and April, where he already stands out and where he fits in at his position.
To kickoff the re-occuring feature, we sat down with defensive line coach Kevin Patrick. Here is his take:
Coach Patrick's Insights on Cory Grissom: “Cory is a big body guy that has a lot of tools. We are trying to refine those skills and get him to develop at least three moves: one pass, one speed rush, one good power rush and counters on each. One of his focuses this spring is to work on his lowering his pad level and coming off on the ball to be a dominant force at nose, especially in the run game. We really want Cory to provide us with a solid, reliable two-deep at nose tackle this spring.” |
