TAMPA -The University of South Florida softball team (26-13 overall, 5-2 conference) came out in the first game of the doubleheader scoring three runs in the first inning to ignite a 6-1 win.
Freshman Gina Kafalas and junior Tara Toscano singled in the first and stole a base to put two runners in scoring position. Freshman Janine Richardson sent a shot to right center, landing her a triple and two RBI. Junior Cat Olnick successfully suicide squeezed Richardson, tallying the third run of the inning.
After a throwing error by Georgetown, the Bulls scored one run in the fourth to go up 4-0.
Olnick once again led the Bulls at the plate adding to her 10-game hitting streak by powering a ball over the left field fence in the fifth with Richardson on second, which closed the doors on the Hoyas, 6-0.
“I am seeing the ball really well right now and I am taking hard cuts,” said Olnick. “I worked hard in the off season to prepare myself for this year and the tough teams that we face.”
The Hoyas tried to make a comeback in the seventh, scoring one run on two hits.
Richardson and Olnick had two of the Bulls' eight hits in the game and accounted for all five RBI.
Senior Cristi Ecks (5-1) got the start and the win pitching 6.2 innings and striking out seven and not allowing a walk.
Fellow senior Bree Spence entered the game on the mound striking out the final batter of the inning to secure the win.
