“It was disappointing from the get-go,” said Coach Lelo Prado. “When you are building a program and are trying to get to where you want to go, you can't have games like this. The guys have to understand that and bring it to the ballpark every day.”
Although USF left 12 runners on base, the pitching staff struck out five and allowed only four runs, despite two Bulls errors.
Junior LHP Teddy Kaufman (1-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season and sophomore Kevin Quackenbush pitched effectively to close out the game. Kaufman pitched 7.1 innings, striking out five, but allowing four runs from nine hits. Quackenbush tossed 1.2 innings in relief, giving up only three hits.
“Teddy did a great for us tonight,” said Coach Lelo Prado. “Both pitchers did a good job tonight.”
USF put up one run in both the first and second innings, but Stetson cut the margin in half in the sixth and took the lead with three more in the eighth. USF added one in the eighth, but the Bulls were unable to score with bases loaded in a pair of innings, dropping their eighth game of the season.
Seven batters recorded a hit for the Bulls, led a pair from Ryan Lockwood, Jonathan Koscso, Mike Consolmagno and Peter Brotons.
With one out in the first, Jonathan Koscso sent a base hit up the middle, then moved to third on an error by Mark Jones, the Hatter third baseman. Koscso scored USF's first run on a wild pitch thrown by Andy Mauldin.
In the second, Junior Carlin bunted for a base hit, then moved to second on another throwing error by Jones. Carlin moved to third as Trey Manz grounded out to shortstop, then Mike Consolmagno grounded out to second base, allowing Carlin to score USF's second run of the game.
USF held the 2-0 lead through five innings, until the Hatters plated one run in the sixth to cut the lead in half. A pair of base hits and three ground outs led to Stetson's first run of the game.
After a pitching change by the Hatters ? LHP David Burns - in the bottom of the sixth, Consolmagno, Peter Brotons and Ryan Lockwood bunted the bases loaded with three consecutive bunts for base hits. This forced a second pitching change, bringing in RHP Jake Hitchcock. USF was unable to score, though, as Koscso popped out to second, Sam Mende struck out swinging and Stephen Hunt grounded out to first base.
Stetson took the lead in the eighth scoring three runs from four hits, including a double by Aaron Crittenden.
Brazeal was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth, and was moved to third on a sac bunt and a ground out. Consolmagno hit a sharp grounder to shortstop and outran the throw to record an RBI single. Brotons added a two-out single to left field and Lockwood drew a walk to load the bases for Koscso. With two outs, Koscso grounded out to second base, leaving three runners stranded for the second time.
USF travels to Daytona Beach, Fla., to play Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday, then hits the road for a three-game set with the UConn Huskies in Storrs, Conn.
