Storrs, Conn. ? The University of South Florida baseball team defeated the University of Connecticut 5-2 on Saturday afternoon to improve to 4-2 in BIG EAST play.
The Bulls got a home run from Jonathan Koscso, the first of his career as well as three hits from sophomore standout Ryan Lockwood.
Todd Brazeal collected two of the five RBI for the Bulls and freshman Sam Mende doubled in the victory.
Matt Quevedo got his first start of the 2009 season and picked up his fourth victory of the season after pitching six innings and allowing just one earned run on eight hits while striking out five.
Shawn Sanford finished off the game for the Bulls and picked up the his third save of the season and the 25th of his career tying him with Danny Montero (1991-92) for fourth in USF history.
The Bulls continued their offensive hit parade with 13 hits in the second game of the double-header with the Huskies.
USF used small ball to put the first run on the board as Ryan Lockwood reached on a base hit then moved to second on a sac bunt by Jonathan Koscso and to third after a ground out from Todd Brazeal. Senior Chris Rey singled through the left side to plate Lockwood, his third RBI of the two-game day.
UConn tied the game in the fourth with a triple from Peter Fatse and a double off the bat of Mike Nemeth.
The Bulls regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of hits and two players reaching base after being hit by pitches. With one out, Lockwood singled and Koscso was hit by a pitch, then both picked up stolen bases to move into scoring position. A single from Brazeal drove in both baserunners and gave USF the 3-1 lead.
In the sixth, Connecticut cut the margin to one after Pierre LePage reached on a fielding error by Sam Mende then Nemeth doubled to left field to score UConn's second run.
In the bottom of the sixth the Bulls loaded the bases with a pair of hits from Junior Carlin and Lockwood and a HBP from Koscso, but were unable to score any runs.
Koscso led the ninth with a long home run over the 365 fence in left field, his first-career bomb at USF. The Bulls then loaded the bases as Brazeal and Smith picked up base hits and Consolmagno drew a walk. With one out, Carlin sent a sacrifice fly to left to score Brazeal, then Smith was thrown out on a double steal attempt from he and Consolmagno.
USF has a little break this week playing only four games in seven days, instead of the regular five. The Bulls will play all four of those games at home, hosting FAU at 7 p.m. Wednesday then a three-game BIG EAST weekend series with Pittsburgh.
