SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. ? The University of South Florida softball team (30-20 overall, 9-9 BIG EAST) exploded with 10 runs in the sixth inning to defeat Seton Hall, 10-4, in game two of the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
USF fell behind 4-0 in the first inning on three Seton Hall hits.
The Bulls tallied only four hits in the first five innings of play before the flood gates opened.
The Bulls had seven hits in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Tara Toscano led off the inning reaching first on four straight balls. Senior Britta Giddens followed with a single and junior Cat Olnick reached first on an error to load the bases. Junior JoJo Medina sent a long fly ball to right center to plate Toscano and Giddens and cut the Pirate lead to two.
Junior Ashley Bullion came up with a pinch hit single to center that allowed the pinch-runner Becky Frye to score and narrow the deficit to 4-3.
Designated player Lauren Rodriguez walked to load the bases for the second time in the inning. A throwing error by Seton Hall pushed pinch runner Kelly McCarver home to even the score up at 4-4. Freshman Laura Fountain lined a single to right field to bring home two more runners and give their Bulls first lead of the game.
USF did let up as pinch hitter Kendall Arnold singled to the right field fence with the bases loaded to push the Bulls lead to 8-4. Giddens ripped an RBI single in her second plate appearance of the inning. Olnick roped the seventh hit of the inning to bring home the final run, No. 10.
All total USF sent 14 players to plate and scored 10 runs on seven hits. Seton Hall had three errors in the game, allowed four base on balls and hit one batter.
Freshman Candace Howell (7-5) earn her team-leading seventh win as she tossed 2.1 innings of work, striking out three batters.
Senior Bree Spence started, but earned a no-decision.
The Bulls return to the USF Softball Stadium to close out the home regular season schedule against Providence on Friday, April 24. Coach Ken Eriksen and the coaching staff will honor seniors Cristi Ecks, Britta Giddens, Caitlin Schneider, Bree Spence and Liz Howell during the final home games of their career.
