TAMPA -- Former USF wide receiver Taurus Johnson inked a free agent deal with the Kansas City Chiefs late Sunday evening. The standout offensive performer will begin rookie mini camp on Thursday.
Johnson was a fringe draft prospect that could benefit from the free agency process. The Cape Coral native was able to handpick from a group of interested teams and felt like the Chiefs provided the best opportunity.
Johnson was a third-team All-BIG EAST performer in 2008. He concluded his career among the top receivers in program history, ranking second on USF career list in touchdowns (12), third in receiving yards (1,434) and receptions (112). The elusive runner is also second in USF career books for kickoff returns, third in kickoff return yards (784) and seventh in games played (48) .
In 2008, Johnson was second on the 2008 team with 38 receptions. He led the squad with career-best six touchdowns, while averaging 13.1 yards per reception. Posted 2008 single-game best of seven reception against Kansas, while also reeling in six receptions and 143 yards against UCF. His touchdown against UCF was the game-winner in overtime. Also reeled in two touchdowns catches against Syracuse and Memphis.
Linebacker Tyrone McKenzie was drafted in the third round by the New England Patriots. He is the first player in USF history to be taken in the third round and went at the third highest position in program history.
