ORLANDO, Fla. ? The University of South Florida baseball team, fresh off a series sweep of West Virginia, lost game one of a home-and-home series with UCF 9-5 on Tuesday.
The Bulls lost to the Knights for the first time this season after defeating them twice earlier in 2009. USF defeated UCF 8-5 at home on March 10, and 13-5 at UCF on March 11.
USF starter Matt Quevedo was tagged with his first loss of the season to drop him to 5-1 in his junior campaign. Quevedo pitched six innings and allowed five earned runs while striking out four Knights.
Kyle Eastham and Joe Cole combined to allow four runs on three hits through two innings of relief of Quevedo.
Evan Stobbs picked up the win for the Knights after pitching 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out seven.
Ryan Lockwood has now reached base safely in 85 consecutive games, as he collected three hits and walked once in the loss to UCF.
The Bulls also got a pair of hits from Jonathan Koscso and Sam Mende. Mende added a pair of RBI, and scored one of USF's five runs.
Junior Carlin picked up another hit for the Bulls after going 8-9 in the weekend series against West Virginia, which earned him BIG EAST Player of the Week honors.
USF took the early 3-0 lead, but a three-run homer by UCF designated hitter D.J. Hicks in the fourth and a two-run bomb in the sixth gave the Knights the 5-3 edge. With the bases loaded, UCF added another run in the seventh off a sac fly.
Lockwood started the game 3-for-3 with a trio of base hits to the outfield. Classmate Koscso started 2-for-2 with a double down the left line and a base hit to left field.
Back to back hits by Lockwood and Koscso then a sac fly by Stephen Hunt scored the first run of the game in the opening frame.
USF added two runs in the second as four consecutive Bulls reached base ? three hits and one hit by pitch ? with one out. Mende reached on an infield single, Peter Brotons was hit by a pitch, then Lockwood and Koscso each picked up RBI on their base hits to the outfield.
UCF's D.J. Hicks hit a three-run homer in the fourth, then hit a two-run shot in the sixth to give UCF their first lead of the game.
The Knights added one in the seventh on one hit, a pair of walks and a sac fly.
Cole came in to relieve Eastham inn the seventh with the bases loaded and only allowed one run on a sacrifice fly by Chris Duffy.
Todd Brazeal and Trey Manz walked in the top of the eighth, and Carlin singled to load the bases for Mende. Mende singled in a pair of runs to cut the lead to 6-5. After Brotons struck out, Lockwood walked to load the bases yet again. The Bulls were not able to capitalize as Koscso flew out to leave the bases loaded and end the inning.
Colin Arnold walked for the Knights in the bottom of the eighth, and after a Chris Duffy single, Brandon Romans homered to give UCF the 9-5 advantage.
The Bulls went down in order in the ninth to give UCF their first victory over USF this season.
The two teams will meet for the fourth time of the season Wednesday at Red McEwen at 7 p.m.
