JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of South Florida baseball team lost 12-10 to Jacksonville on Tuesday despite another home run and five RBI from Trey Manz.
Manz had no home runs until Sunday, when he hit two round-trippers, including one that sent the game to extra innings against Pitt. The catcher picked up his third four-bagger of the season Tuesday night against Jacksonville.
Manz went 2-5 on the night while picking up five RBI and scoring a pair of runs against JU.
The USF pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts in the game against the Dolphins, the most in a single game this season. The 13 strikeouts broke the previous high of 12 which they had against FAU (4/1) and Indiana (2/22).
Teddy Kaufman started for USF, but was replaced by Kyle Eastham after pitching 1.1 innings and allowing four earned runs on five hits. Eastham was replaced by Joe Cole who collected seven strikeouts, a game high, in 4.1 innings. Kevin Quackenbush came in to close the game, striking out two in the bottom of the eighth.
Both teams combined to use 11 pitchers on the night, four by USF and seven by JU.
The Bulls had three players with at least two hits including Manz, Todd Brazeal and Chris Rey.
USF exploded for five runs in the first inning as seven consecutive batters reached base after a leadoff strikeout. Jonathan Koscso drew a walk to begin the trend, Todd Brazeal sent a base hit through the left side and Chris Rey was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior Trey Manz continued his hot hitting with a single up the middle, which drove in USF's first two runs. Manz had three hits in his last game, two of which were home runs.
Still with just one out in the first, Daniel Rockhold drew a walk, then Sam Mende collected an RBI after being hit by a pitch. Mike Consolmagno also registered an RBI after drawing a bases-loaded walk, then Peter Brotons sent a grounder to shortstop, which plated USF's fifth run of the inning.
Jacksonville scored 11 unanswered runs over the next five innings, including a five-run first inning and three runs in the third.
The Bulls were held scoreless until the sixth, when Rockhold drew a walk, advanced to second on a balk, then scored when Brotons singled to the JU shortstop.
The Bulls added three more in the seventh as Manz tagged his third home run in the last two games, a towering shot to right field. He collected a pair of home runs in the final game of the Pittsburgh series, one of which was the game-tying bomb in the ninth.
In the eighth, Koscso sent a double to left center field, then scored on a base hit to right field by Brazeal.
USF was not able to come back in the ninth, as they went down in order to drop the game 12-10.
USF travels to Washington, D.C., to play a three-game BIG EAST series against Georgetown. The Bulls and Hoyas face off at 1 p.m. on Thursday, 4 p.m. Friday and Noon on Saturday.

Trey Manz hit his third home run in his last seven at bats, a towering three-run shot over the right field wall. Manz also hit the game-tying home run on April 5 against Pittsburgh and another in the sixth inning against the Panthers.
