TAMPA. ? Six days and three rain delays after the first pitch of a game that started on May 6 in Jacksonville, Fla., the University of South Florida baseball team was defeated 11-6 by the University of North Florida on May 12 at Red McEwen Field.
USF trailed UNF 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning on May 6 in Jacksonville, but the game was suspended due to bad weather. Six days later, the Ospreys came to Tampa to finish the game.
Redshirt freshman Todd Brazeal connected on a three-run home run and junior Peter Brotons had a pair of hits to lead the Bulls offensively.
Junior Teddy Kaufman was tagged with the loss after allowing six earned runs from 10 hits in 4.1 innings. He collected four strikeouts in the game.
Sophomore Jonathan Koscso tagged a triple in the first, then scored on a base hit from classmate Stephen Hunt.
UNF answered with five runs, collecting a pair of base hits, a double and a three-run home run.
After three scoreless innings, the Bulls regained the lead with five runs of their own in the fifth. Redshirt freshman Todd Brazeal drove in Koscso and Hunt on a three-run homer to left to start the scoring explosion. Sophomore Junior Carlin drew a walk then senior Trey Manz had a base hit up the middle, both scoring later in the inning.
Then the rain came and the teams waited 40 minutes before resuming play.
UNF collected two runs after the delay, then , with one out and a runner on first, the rain came again, and the teams decided to suspend the game for the night.
After an hour rain delay on May 12, play resumed and UNF scored three runs over the final two innings to take their 22nd victory of the season.
Game Two between USF and UNF will begin in 45 minutes, at approximately 8:30 p.m. at Red McEwen Field in Tampa.
