Mountaineers Drop Bulls In Four Sets

MORGANTOWN, W. Va.- The University of South Florida could not get going after an emotional win after Pittsburgh, and ended up falling to West Virginia in four sets on Sunday.
The Bulls struggled defensively and could not match the intensity of West Virginia in the match, falling three sets to one.
USF was coming off of an emotional five-set comeback win over Pittsburgh on Saturday, but could not feed off of the energy, and even though the Bulls were able to take the opening set, could not keep it going, and dropped the final three frames to drop to 4-2 in conference play.
After a game in while the Bulls had a pair of players with over 15 kills in Allie Boaz and J'beria Davis, USF did not have anyone in double-figures in kills in the loss against West Virginia.
Freshman Andre Rodriguez Gomez led the Bulls with nine kills and 2.0 blocks, followed by Boaz, who collected eight kills. Boaz collected a career high 28 kills on Saturday, but could not get it going against the Mountaineers.
West Virginia entered the match leading the country in digs, and USF knew that it would be a defensive struggle against the scrappy Mountaineers, but USF struggled collecting just 69 digs as a team. Janice Rivera and Christine Knoechel led the Bulls with 16 kills apiece on the day, followed by Rodriguez Gomez with 13.
The Bulls hit just .055 compared to the Mountaineers .166, and West Virginia outblocked USF 11.0 to 9.0 in the loss.
The Bulls got off to a quick start against the Mountaineers, pulling out to a 6-1 lead in the opening frame. WVU was able to close the gap to within two, but the Bulls hung on to take set one 25-19.
The West Virginia passing improved in the second set, and after back and forth action early on, the Mountaineers were able to pull away and take the second set 25-19.
After the break, USF came out on fire, building a 6-1 lead, but the Mountaineers fought back, and eventually put USF away late, to take the set 25-16.
The fourth set was more of the same for the Bulls, as West Virginia was able to jump out to the early lead, and despite some back-and-forth, the Mountaineers took the set in convincing fashion, 25-16.
USF finishes the weekend at 1-1, and 4-2 in league play, and will be back on the road next weekend when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown.
