TAMPA – Junior Gina Pacheco scored in the 65th minute to give the University of South Florida a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats Sunday afternoon at the USF Soccer Stadium.
After coming up short on a number of scoring opportunities throughout the match, Pacheco took a feed from fellow junior Venicia Reed, who was on a breakaway. Cincinnati keeper Ashley Daniels came out to the far right of the 18-yard box to challenge Reed, which left the net wide pen for Pacheco, who buried the easy feed from Reed for what would prove to be the eventual game-winner.
Senior defender Angelique Waller picked up her first assist of the season after being awarded the second assist on the play after her lead pass broke Reed free.
The goal was the first of the season for Pacheco and the fifth of her career. The assist for Reed was her team-leading sixth of the season. She has picked up an assist in each of the last two matches and now has 17 points on the season.
Despite being held scoreless for the first 64 minutes of play, USF dominated every facet of the match.
Offensively, the Bulls had a number of scoring opportunities that they couldn't cash in on.
The Bulls outshot the visiting Bearcats, 21-5, and peppered Cincinnati keeper Ashley Daniels with 12 shots on goal. Junior Chelsea Klotz took eight shots on the day with five them being on goal.
The Bulls possessed the ball well throughout the match and did so mostly in the Bearcats defensive third. The Bulls took eight corners on the day, which is the second most this season while not yielding a corner to the Bearcats, which was a season low.
Defensively the Bulls were solid, limiting the Bearcats to just two shots on goal, both of which were handled by keeper Nicole McClure with ease. The shutout for McClure was her sixth of the season and second in as many matches.
After entering the day tied for third in the BIG EAST's American Division with UConn and Providence, the Bulls now have 14 points and are still tied with UConn after the Huskies 3-1 win over DePaul.
Providence fell 3-1 to No. 4 Notre Dame earlier to fall into fifth place.
Heading into the final weekend, USF is three points ahead of Providence and four points ahead of St. John's and Syracuse.
The Bulls will close out the regular season with a pair of matches next weekend at the USF Soccer Stadium.
The Bulls will host St. John's on Friday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. and then wrap up the regular season when they welcome the Orange of Syracuse on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m. The Syracuse match will be Senior Day.
