FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of South Florida volleyball team put up a strong defensive fight Saturday afternoon against Texas Christian University, but it wasn't enough to halt the powerful offensive attack of the Horned Frogs as the Bulls concluded the 2010 season with a 3-0 loss.
TCU used a.279 clip to take the match by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-20, improving to 15-16 on the year, while USF, who outnumbered the Horned Frogs in the blocking column with eight on the day, dropped to 10-18 on the season. The Bulls are now 3-2 all-time against TCU, including 1-2 in Fort Worth.
Outside hitter J'beria Davis turned up the heat on offense for the Bulls as she led the way with a team-high 13 kills, while senior Allie Boaz concluded her collegiate career with nine kills, a career-high nine digs and three blocks. The duo combined for 22 of the Bulls' 36 kills.
Kimika Rozier contributed on both sides of the net for USF as she hit a blistering .400 with five kills to go along with a match-high four blocks. Anchoring the Bull offense was senior Mariana Thon, who finished her USF career with a double-double as she dished a match-high 30 assists and collected 10 digs.
Controlling the back row was junior libero Janice Rivera with a match-high 13 digs on the day. She combined with Thon for 23 of the Bulls' 50 digs. Rivera was one of two Bulls to record a service ace.
The first set was all TCU as the Horned Frogs took control from the first serve, jumping out to a 4-1 lead. USF got within one, but the host continued to use their aggressive offense to keep the lead out of reach. The Bulls were unable to tie the set or take the lead as the Horned Frogs scored the last seven points of the set to claim a 25-16 win as they controlled the match with a one set advantage.
Set two was much different for USF from a defensive standpoint as the Bulls notched three blocks and forced four errors. The Bulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on for much of the first set as the stanza saw four tie scores and one lead change when TCU jumped ahead following a kill by Irene Hester.
USF put up a much harder fight coming out of the break, opening the third set with a quick 3-0 lead. It was a head-to-head battle for most of the set with seven tie scores and three lead changes. The Bulls forced eight TCU errors and held them to a .152 hitting percentage, their lowest of the match.
The Bulls dominated on the net with five blocks and were in control of the set going into a 14-14 tie. TCU never gave up and took the final lead off a kill by Kristen Hester that put the host up 15-14, which was the closest USF would come to the victory as the Bulls made one last run, getting within four to make it 24-20, but TCU closed out the set with an Irene Hester kill to claim the 25-20 win.
