BOCA RATON, Fla. -Â The University of South Florida men's basketball team fell 50-42 to Florida Atlantic University Saturday in Boca Raton. Both teams played extremely well defensively with both teams shooting less than 50 percent from the floor.
Senior
Jarrid Famous led the Bulls in scoring with nine points, going 3-of-6 from the floor.
Shedrick Haynes added six points tying a career high set on Nov. 12 against Southern Miss in the season opener.
The Bulls held the Owls to only 42.2 percent (19-45) shooting on the night and forced 16 turnovers.Â
USF's bench outscored FAU's bench 26-10 for the game, but unfortunately, the Bulls were outrebounded for the first time this season, 35-29.
The Bulls scored the first two points of the game before FAU went on a 13-2 run to take an early 13-4 lead.Â
An offensive rebound and put-back by sophomore
Mike Burwell sparked back-to-back dunks by
Jarrid Famous and drew the game to just six points, a margin that would hold as the teams went into the locker room at the half.
Sophomore
Jawanza Poland hit the first three-pointer of the game for USF early in the second half as the Bulls struggled from beyond the arc going 1-of-16 as a team.Â
USF outscored FAU 9-5 in the first four minutes of the second half and quickly cut the Owl lead to four. At the 14-minute mark, Poland again sparked the Bulls, hitting a jumper to bring the score within two.
Redshirt junior
Ron Anderson Jr. converted a three-point play to cut the lead to one with 3:12 left in the game.Â
That was as close as the Bulls would get as FAU benefitted from a number of USF turnovers in the final minutes and was able to seal the game from the free throw line.
USF falls to 5-4 with the loss. After a week without games due to finals, the Bulls'Â next game will be on Sunday, Dec. 12 at Kent State.
