
Bulls Earn Big 4-3 Win Over Notre Dame

TAMPA- The University of South Florida men's tennis team competed in its first BIG EAST match on Saturday against Notre Dame. The Bulls took down the Irish 4-3.
It was a sunny day at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. Sophomore Wael Kilani started the day out for the Bulls with a win. Kilani competed in the No.1 singles position for the Bulls against Stephen Havens. Kilani took down Havens in two sets 6-2, 6-3.
Junior Jamal Adderley kept the momentum going for USF in his match against Dan Stahl. Adderley competed in the No. 2 singles position for the Bulls and he took care of Stahl in two sets 6-3, 6-4.
Sophomore Mark Oljaca competed in the No. 5 singles position against Blas Moros. Oljaca fell to Moros in two sets 6-4, 6-4. That closed the Bulls lead to one.
Junior Romain Deridder competed in the No. 4 singles position for USF against Sam Keeton. Both players battled it out and Deridder picked up the first set over Keeton 7-6 and Keeton would come back in the second set and win it 6-1 which sent the match into a third set. Deridder ended up losing to Keeton in the third set 6-2. That tied things up between the two teams 2-2.
Freshman Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard competed in the No. 6 singles position against Tyler Davis. This was a fierce battle between the two players. Acuna won the first set against Davis 6-2 but Davis came back in the second set and won it 6-0. In the third set Acuna would fall behind 5-1 before coming back and making it 5-4. Davis would go on to win the next game which gave him the 6-4 third set win over Acuna. With the win the Irish took their first lead of the day.
Freshman Peter Frank also competed in a tough match on Saturday against David Anderson. After losing the first set 6-4, Frank would come back and win the second set 6-2 which sent the match into a third set. In the third set Frank would top Anderson 6-4. That once again tied things up between the two teams and the doubles point would be decider in this match.
Senior Thomas Estrada and Adderley teamed up together in the No. 1 doubles position for the Bulls against Havens and Niall Fitzgerald. Estrada and Adderley topped Havens and Fitzgerald 8-4.
Frank and Deridder took on Anderson and Stahl in the No. 3 doubles postion. Frank and Deridder fell to Anderson and Stahl 8-2. With each team having won one doubles match it would come down to the No. 2 doubles match to decide who would walk away with the win.
Kilani and Yoshizwa teamed up together and took on Davis and Spencer Talmedge in the No. 2 doubles position. This was a back and forth match between the two doubles teams. After falling behind 5-4 Davis and Talmedge would come back and make it 5-5. Kilani and Yoshizawa would go on to beat Davis and Talmedge 8-6 and with the win the Bulls earned the 4-3 win over the Irish.
The Bulls will be back in action on Sunday when they welcome Princeton to the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. The match is set to start at 10 a.m.
