TAMPA- The No. 66 University of South Florida men's tennis team was back in action on Saturday when they competed in their third day at the Blue-Gray Invitational and took on the No. 69 William and Mary Tribe. The Bulls fell to the Tribe 4-3.
Sophomore Mark Oljaca and freshman Juan Carlos Acuna Gerard started out the day for USF with a win. Oljaca and Gerard teamed up together in the No. 3 doubles spot to take on Daniel Mihalvo and Ilja Orre. Oljaca and Gerard downed Mihalvo and Orre 8-4.
Senior Thomas Estrada and junior Jamal Adderley competed against Jamie Whiteford and Sebastien Vidal. Estrada and Adderley lost to Whiteford and Sebastien 8-5.
With each team having won one doubles match it would all come down to the No. 2 doubles match to decide who would have the 1-0 advantage heading into singles competition. The No. 2 doubles match featuring sophomore Wael Kilani and sophomore Yannick Yoshizawa versus Kezeil Juneau and Anton Andersson proved to be a nail bitter and both teams fought hard to the very end. Both teams kept things close throughout the entire match but when it was all said and done Kilani and Yoshizawa were the one's walking away victorious with the 9-7 win over Juneau and Andersson. That gave the Bulls the 1-0 lead heading into singles competition.
Gerard started out singles competition for the Bulls in his No. 6 singles match against Orre. Gerard took care of Orre in two straight sets 6-2, 6-0. That gave USF a 2-0 lead over William and Mary.
No. 104 Kilani competed in the No. 1 singles spot against Juneau. Kilani lost to Juneau in two straight sets 6-3, 6-1 and that gave the Tribe their first point of the day.
Freshman Peter Frank took on Whiteford in the No. 3 singles spot. Frank was downed by Whiteford 6-2, 6-1. That tied things up 2-2 between the two teams.
Adderley competed in the No. 2 singles spot for the Bulls against Vidal. Despite managing to keep things close Adderley lost to Vidal 7-6, 7-6. That gave the Tribe their first lead of the day.
Oljaca competed against Andersson in the No. 5 singles spot. After losing the first set 6-2, Oljaca would fight back and win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3. That once again tied things up between the two teams and the No. 4 singles match would be the deciding factor in this match.
Junior Romain Deridder took on Richard Wardell in the No. 4 singles spot. After winning the first set 6-3, Deridder would lose the next two sets 6-3, 6-3. With the win the Tribe earned their fourth point of the day and they earned the 4-3 win over the Bulls.
The Bulls will be back in action on Wednesday, March 24, when they host BIG EAST opponent DePaul. The match is set to take place at 2 p.m.
