TAMPA-- In their final tune up before BIG EAST Conferenceplay, senior left-handed pitcher
Teddy Kaufman and the University of South Florida baseball team shook off a shaky start to claim a 10-7 victory over in-state foe North Florida.
After giving up three runs in the first inning, Kaufman settled in and shut down the Osprey lineup until the sixth inning, when he yielded one unearned run. Kaufman would go six innings allowing four runs on five hits while striking out eight, en route to his team leading third win of the season. Only three of the runs were earned.
Kaufman was relieved by
Kyle Eastham, who pitched 2.0 innings and would strike out two while allowing two hits and one run.
USF pitching combined for 13 strikeouts. It is the fifth time in the last six games in which the Bulls' pitching has recorded at least 10 strikeouts in a game.
After not allowing a run in his complete game shutout of UCF one week ago, the UNF Ospreys jumped on Kaufman early. UNF collected three runs on three hits to take the early 3-0 lead through the top of the first.
In the bottom half of the first, the Bulls continued their recent trend of two out magic.
Hunt singled, and advanced to third after
Todd Brazeal and
Eric Sim were each hit by a pitch.
Junior Carlin then doubled to left to clear the bases and tie the game at 3-3. Carlin would come in to score from second on a single by
Daniel Rockhold to put USF up 4-3 through one.
The Bulls added another run in the second, as
Chad Taylor walked to lead off and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Lockwood. Koscso singled to left to score Taylor and give USF the 5-3 advantage.
Jimmy Falla started the rally for the Bulls in the bottom of the fourth with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sac bunt by Taylor. Back-to-back doubles by Lockwood and Koscso plated a pair for the Bulls, and a single by Brazeal would bring home a third for the Bulls in the bottom of the fourth.
The Ospreys cut the USF lead to 8-4, as they were able to score a run without picking up a hit in the top of the sixth.
UNF would add another in the eighth on back-to-back two out hits to trim the deficit to 8-5.
The Bulls' success with two outs continued in the bottom of the 8th, as Koscso reached base after getting hit by a pitch. After a Hunt single, Brazeal was hit by a pitch, and Sim came through with a two-run single to extend the USF lead to 10-5.
Junior closer
Kevin Quackenbush struck out the side in ninth to seal the victory and move the Bulls to 8-13 on the season with the BIG EAST Conference opening series against Notre Dame scheduled this weekend, March 25-27, at Red McEwen.
