TAMPA--The University of South Florida got another excellent pitching effort on Saturday, this time from junior lefthander
Andrew Barbosa, as the Bulls won their fifth straight game and second straight over Notre Dame by a score of 6-3.
The win in game one of Saturday's double-header was the third straight over the Irish dating back to 2009.
After a no hitter by
Randy Fontanez on Friday night, Barbosa turned in another good outing for the Bulls as he went 6.2 innings, which tied his longest outing of the season. He allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out three.
It took Notre Dame 40 batters to finally collect their first hit of the series against the Bulls. After the no-hitter on Friday night and a solid beginning by Barbosa on Saturday, the Irish were hitless on the weekend until registering a single in the top of the third inning.
Jonathan Koscso continued his success against the Irish as he collected three hits in five at-bats, including the game tying RBI double in fifth inning.
The Bulls' bats stayed hot as all but two USF starters picked up a hit for the second consecutive game.
Left fielder
Junior Carlin singled i nthe seventh to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
The Bulls kept their two-out success going in the bottom half of the first inning as
Sam Mende doubled down the right field line to start a rally. After a walk to
Stephen Hunt, both runners scored on a two-run double by
Eric Sim.
The Irish would get the scoreboard for the first time in the series by posting two runs in the fourth inning. An RBI double from Bill Warrender, the first hit of his career, and a sacrifice fly from Frank Desico tied the game at 2-2.
Notre Dame added another in the top of the fifth, but USF responded with a pair of their own in the bottom half. With two outs in the inning, the Bulls got a walk from junior
Ryan Lockwood, who would come around to score on a double by Koscso. Koscso came in to score and give the Bulls a 4-3 lead on a single to right by Hunt.
The Bulls added an insurance run in the sixth as Carlin came in to score on a
Todd Brazeal double down the left field line. The Bulls took a 6-3 lead in the seventh as Lockwood scored on an error by Desico at second base.
Joe Cole relieved Barbosa in the seventh and pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless ball. He only allowed one single while closing out the Irish attack.
