TAMPA - Junior right-hander pitcher
Randy Fontanez of the University of South Florida baseball team has been named one of six Louisville Slugger's National Players of the Week by Lou Pavlovich at Collegiate Baseball News.
Fontanez threw the third no-hitter in USF history during a 4-0 win over Notre Dame on Friday night at Red McEwen Field. He recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts and allowed only a pair of walks. He threw 119 pitches, and 80 of them were strikes.
Official Release Collegiate Baseball NewsThe win marked the first of the season for the 2010 BIG EAST Preseason Pitcher of the Year, who suffered some tough luck in his first few outings. Now 1-4 on the season, Fontanez owns a 3.38 ERA with opposing batters hitting just .217 off him. He now leads the team with 46 strikeouts on the season in a team high 42.2 innings pitched.
The awards marks the second time in as many weeks that a USF pitcher was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week, after senior lefthander
Teddy Kaufman was named one last week.
