Bulls' Ninth Inning Rally Comes Up Short Against Lumberjacks

Down 3-0 to start the ninth, junior outfielder Stephen Hunt reached base on a two-base error by SFA left fielder Ryan Priest. After junior Eric Sim was hit by a pitch, USF had the tying run at the plate in pinch-hitter Alex Mendez, who singled through the left side to load the bases.
USF would finally get on the board as Junior Carlin sent a shot off the glove of the pitcher for an infield single to score Hunt.
With the score 3-1, and the bases still loaded, junior Ryan Lockwood was hit by a pitch, which allowed Sim to walk home and narrow the deficit to one run.
With the bases still loaded, junior Jonathan Koscso and redshirt-freshman Sean Buckley ended the game and the Bulls' rally with a pair of pop-ups.
Carlin continued his offensive hot streak. The Riverview native went 3-for-5 on the day and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Carlin is now hitting a team-best .421 in 2010.
The hit streak is the longest of his career, surpassing the eight-game streak he had from March 1-14 last season.
Stephen F. Austin would get on board in the second inning with three extra base hits off USF starter Matt Stull. SFA added another run in the fifth inning.
Stull went 4.1 innings scattering five hits and striking out four in his first start of the season. All three SFA's runs were on his bill and were earned.
USF received 3.2 innings of scoreless relief work from the combo of junior Kevin Quackenbush and senior Joe Cole. Cole was superb, throwing three scoreless innings and striking out two. In four appearances this season, Cole has given up just one earned run.
USF had its opportunities and left 11 men on base, including two bases runners with no outs in the eighth inning.
Prior to the game, USF head coach Lelo Prado moved freshman Ray Delphey to the closer role. That means that junior Andrew Barbosa will start Saturday's rematch with Oklahoma. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. Eastern. Barbosa will be opposed by Oklahoma RHP Bobby Shore.
Sophomore Jimmy Moran is scheduled to make his first start as a Bull Sunday against Western Illinois.
