NORMAN, Okla. - Nine different Bulls registered hits as the University of South Florida baseball team finished the 2010 Sooner Classic with an 16-2 rout of Western Illinois.
All but one USF starter registered a hit in the game. Junior outfielder
Junior Carlin was the lone USF starter not to get a hit and by going 0-for-4 on the day, he snapped his 12-game hitting streak. Despite going hitless on the day, Carlin had a stellar Sooner Classic going 7-for-18 in the four games in Norman. Carlin still leads the team with a .391 batting average.
Seven Bulls collected multiple hits in the contest including juniors
Ryan Lockwood and
Eric Sim, who collected three hits apiece. Lockwood scored three times on the day to go along with two RBI. Lockwood's average is now up to .273 on the year.
It is the second time this season that Sim has tallied three hits in a game.
The Bulls got the scoring going in the second inning, which was the first of five consecutive frames where the Bulls posted multiple runs.
In the second, USF used back-to-back doubles off the bats of Sim and junior
Stephen Hunt to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead. Hunt would then swipe third and eventually score on
Jonathan Koscso's RBI ground out.
USF would add three more runs in the third inning and then another three-spot to extend the lead to 8-2.
The Bulls broke the game open for good in the fifth. With one out and two on, sophomore
Todd Brazeal connected on a 3-1 pitch and sent a mammoth shot over the left field fence for his first home run of the year.
USF would add two more runs in the inning and another two in the sixth.
The first and seventh innings were the only innings in which the Bulls did not score.
On the day the Bulls collected 18 hits, seven doubles and nine extra base hits. Sim and Hunt led the way with a pair of doubles each.
In the eighth inning, freshman
Chad Taylor added his second homer in as many games with a solo shot over the 411 sign in left center.
Making his first career start, sophomore
Jimmy Moran lasted 3.0 innings while striking out three before leaving the game to USF bullpen.
Using five relievers, the USF bullpen shined, working 6.0 innings of scoreless relief with
Kevin Quackenbush picking up the win. He is now 1-2 on the season.
After missing the last four games, sophomore
Sam Mende was back at shortstop for the Bulls and went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and pair driven in.
Western Illinois' defense committed six errors while USF played an errorless game for the first time since the season opener at Florida.
With the win, USF is now 2-9 on the young season. The win also marked to 699th of Bulls head coach
Lelo Prado's coaching career and the 101st of his time at USF.
Following this weekend's games, USF will return to the Bay Area for seven of its next eight games. The Bulls will open the home portion of their home schedule when they take on Jacksonville for a pair of midweek games on March 9-10 at Red McEwen Field. Senior
Teddy Kaufman will get the start on Tuesday followed by Andrew Salguiero.
