PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The University of South Florida baseball team (16-19, 8-4) dropped the series finale, 13-1, to Rutgers (21-13, 10-2) as the first-place Scarlet Knights completed a three-game sweep of the Bulls Sunday afternoon at Bairton Field in Piscataway, N.J.
The Scarlet Knight did all their damage in three innings. The home team struck first by plating two in the third inning off Bulls starter
Matt Quevedo.
Looking for his third win in as many starts, Quevedo (2-1) did not have such luck. The senior lasted only 3.1 innings, marking his shortest start of the season. He gave up six runs, five earned, on six hits. He struck out just one batter but walked two.
Rutgers delivered the knockout punch to Quevedo and the Bulls by pushing across seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 9-0 in favor of the Knights.
USF scratched across an unearned run in the sixth inning on fielding error by RU centerfielder Michael Lang, who couldn't come up with a fly ball off the bat of
Jonathan Koscso. The error allowed
Chad Taylor, who singled in the inning, to score from first.
Taylor was one of the lone bright spots on the weekend for the Bulls. Taylor, who made his first start in centerfielder for the Bulls on Friday, collected six hits in 11 at-bats in the three-games series. He scored the Bulls' only runs in the Saturday and Sunday losses.
The Bulls put the leadoff runner on in the fourth, sixth and ninth innings but could not capitalize on the opportunities.
Junior shortstop
Sam Mende collected a pair of hits for the Bulls who were out hit, 16-7, on the day.
The Bulls have a busy week as they head to Stetson on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before welcoming No. 7 Florida to Red McEwen Field on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
