TAMPA -- Cornerback Jerome Murphy became the second University of South Florida defensive back taken in the 2010 NFL Draft when he was chosen by the St. Louis Rams with the first pick of the third round (65th overall) in the NFL Draft.
Through 65 picks, USF had the third most players drafted - Murphy, Nate Allen and Jason Pierre-Paul - of any college program.
Murphy follows teammate Nate Allen, who was picked 37th by the Philadelphia Eagles. He also became USF's sixth ever defensive back taken in the NFL Draft along with Allen, Mike Jenkins, Trae Williams, J.R. Reed and Anthony Henry. Six of USF's 14 draft picks have been DBs.
A standout with the Bulls all four years, Murphy played more games than anyone else at USF (52 games). Murphy made 25 career starts, including all 13 games in 2009, when he earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Coaches Second Team along with the All-BIG EAST First Team as named by Phil Steele.
Murphy ranked third on the team in 2009 with 77 tackles while also owning the team lead with eight pass breakups and tying Allen for the team lead with four interceptions. Murphy also had two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 0.5 tackles for loss.
For his career, Murphy finished with 202 tackles, eight interceptions, 18 pass breakups, seven tackles for loss, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and half a sack. In addition, Murphy was a regular on special teams, returning 26 kickoffs for 628 yards for an average of 24.2 yards per return.
