TAMPA - Former University of South Florida defensive end and two-time All-American George Selvie became USF's fifth pick of the 2010 NFL Draft when he was selected by the St. Louis Rams with the 19th pick in the seventh round, the 226th overall pick of the Draft. Of those five picks, four have been defensive players.
Selvie joins linemate Jason Pierre-Paul, who was chosen with the 15th overall pick by the New York Giants on Thursday in becoming the third defensive lineman ever to be selected in the Draft along with 2003 fourth rounder Shurron Pierson.
Selvie also adds to the record total number of Draft picks for USF in 2010 that included safety Nate Allen in the second round, cornerback Jerome Murphy in the third, and wide receiver Carlton Mitchell in the sixth round. Previously, USF had three players chosen in 2001 and 2003 for the most ever in one Draft.
Of the 16 USF players chosen in the Draft throughout the years, Selvie becomes the 12th defensive player.
Perhaps the most decorated player ever to walk the halls of the USF football offices, Selvie was twice honored as an All-American in 2007 by numerous outlets and in 2008 by the American Football Coaches Association, becoming USF's only two-time All-American.
Selvie was the third defensive end to be taken by the Rams Saturday, as he joins those two and four other defensive ends on the roster, including Chris Long, James Wyche, James Hall and Victor Adeyanju.
Selvie had perhaps the greatest defensive season in USF history his sophomore year in 2007 when he was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Ted Hendricks Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy. Selvie finished first in the country and fell half a tackle short of tying the NCAA all-time record for tackles for loss when he posted 31.5 that year.
In addition, Selvie ranked second in the country in sacks with 14.5 and was named the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week after racking up five tackles for loss and three sacks against North Carolina. Selvie posted six TFL and four sacks in a win against Elon to begin the season.
In his senior season, the team captain teamed with Pierre-Paul to form one of the most feared defensive lines in the country, finishing with 42 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, seven quarterback hurries, two pass breakups and a forced fumble and fumble recovery. He was named to the Phil Steele All-BIG EAST First Team as well as the All-BIG EAST Second Team as named by the league's coaches.
For his career, Selvie finished as the all-time USF leader in tackles for loss with 69.5, sacks with 29 and forced fumbles with nine. Selvie also started more games than any other player in USF history with 50, competing in 51 all-together. The Pensacola, Fla., native also had 227 tackles, 32 quarterback hurries and five fumble recoveries during his time at USF.
