CINCINNATI, Ohio -In the past three weeks starters Teddy Kaufman and Randy Fontanez have made headlines through outstanding individual efforts on the mound.
Tonight, it was junior left-handed pitcher Andrew Barbosa's turn to cause a stir. The Riverview High School product threw a complete game shutout, and struck out 16 batters in the University of South Florida baseball team's 5-0 victory over the University of Cincinnatiat Marge Schott Stadium on Friday night.
Making his seventh start of the season, Barbosa commanded the strike zone from the outset. His 16 strikeouts were one shy of the school record of 17 set by Jon Alexander in 1987 and Mark Moore in 1978.
Barbosa only allowed three hits on the night, while walking just one. The big lefty never allowed a runner to reach third base and only allowed two runners to reach second base.
The Bulls' offense provided all the run support Barbosa needed in the opening frame.
With two down in the first, junior outfielder Stephen Hunt gave the Bulls' an early 1-0 lead with a solo shot over the right field wall. The homer was Hunt's team-leading fourth of the season.
After going down in order in the second, USF extended their lead to 3-0 in the third with a little station-to-station baseball. Back-to-back fielder's choices put Jonathan Koscso and Ryan Lockwood on base. A single by Hunt loaded the bases for the Bulls with one out. Sam Mende battled and eventually singled a 2-2 offering through the left side.
USF tacked on a second run in the inning on a fielder's choice by Junior Carlin that scored Koscso.
From that point on, it was the Andrew Barbosa show. And what a show it was.
Of his 16 strikeouts, 14 were swinging, and he struck out a Bearcat in every inning except the ninth.
Barbosa struck out the side in both the fifth and sixth innings. On the night, he threw 128 total pitches, with 100 counting for strikes.
With a 3-0 lead in his pocket, Barbosa got a little extra padding as Daniel Rockhold sent a two-run homer over leftfield wall to extend the lead to 5-0. The homer was the third of the season for Rockhold and was part of a two-hit night for the Bulls' third baseman.
With the win, USF moves to 12-15 and 4-1 in BIG EAST play. Barbosa has now won three straight starts and lowered his team leading ERA to 2.55.
USF out hit the Bearcats by 7-5 margin on the evening.
The Bulls will look to take the series when the squads clash again in Game 3 Saturday at 1 p.m. at Schott Stadium.
