CINCINNATI, Ohio - The University of South Florida baseball team (13-15, 5-1 BIG EAST) won their second straight BIG EAST Conference series by leaving Cincinnati with a 6-3 series finale victory over the Bearcats (13-12, 2-4) on Saturday afternoon.

Making his first start of the season, Matt Quevedo was strong in his spot start for LHP Teddy Kaufman, who was a late scratch. Quevedo went 5.0 innings giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out two on the afternoon.

The win moved Quevedo's record to 1-0 on the season, and put the Bulls into a tie for first place in BIG EAST play with a 5-1 record.

The Bulls jumped out to 1-0 first inning lead for the second game in a row. Leadoff man Ryan Lockwood led the game off with a double down the right field line, and advanced to third on a groundout to the right side by Jonathan Koscso.  Lockwood scored on a throwing error to give USF the early advantage.

In the second inning, USF added another run on a sacrifice fly to right field by Daniel Rockhold which brought home Alex Mendez, who reached on a single.

USF scored two more runs in the third. The first run came on an RBI single by Junior Carlin.  Carlin drove home Stephen Hunt, who led the inning off with a single.   Mendez pushed the lead to 4-0 by reaching on a fielder's choice that allowed Sam Mende to score.

The Bulls tacked on another run in fourth on a sacrifice fly by Hunt.

The Bearcats pushed across  two runs in the fifth off of Quevedo. With two men on, UC's Kevin Johnson sent a low-liner to left which skipped passed a diving Carlin to score both runners.

The Bulls were held scoreless in fifth and sixth innings but added on an insurance run in the seventh. With runners on the corners and one out, Carlin hit a sharp grounder to second that allowed Koscso to beat the throw home and extend the lead to 6-2.

Cincinnati loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth on reliever Kyle Eastham. Eastham allowed one run to score on sac fly to right but then used a 6-4-3 double play to limit the damage.

Closer Kevin Quackenbush shut the door on Bearcats by working a perfect ninth to earn his third save of the season.

USF relievers Trey Dahl and Kyle Eastham combined to allow just one run in four innings of work.

USF out hit Cincinnati 11-7 on the day with Ryan Lockwood, Stephen Hunt, Todd Brazeal and Jonathan Koscso all collecting a pair of hits.

With the win, USF moves to 13-15 on the season and 5-1 in the BIG EAST, which places them in a tie for first in the conference with Louisville and Rutgers.

USF will now turn their focus to a mid-week match-up with the Knight's of UCF on Tuesday, April 6.  The game will be televised on the Brighthouse Sports Network. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. LHP Kyle Parker is expected to start for the Bulls.

Gamenotes

The win marked the 1,300 all-time win in USF history… USF is now 1,300-1,030-4 all-time ... Today's match-up was a rematch between Matt Quevedo and Smith from 2008 ... In the previous meeting, Quevedo struck out five in 6.2 innings of work but allowed five runs and suffered the loss on March 22, 2008 ... Smith went 3.0 innings and did not factor in the decision… Making his third straight start as the designated hitter, Alex Mendez collected one hit on the day… He has hit safely in his last five games and is six for this last 23 at the plate... USF is now 3-6 at Marge Schott Stadium.
