USF's first basketball game occurred during the 1970-71 season, when USF, using an all-freshmen team, defeated the Florida freshmen team, 75-68, for USF's first victory as a basketball program. The following year, 1971-72, would mark the official start for the Bulls with the varsity squad, but that start in 1970 started to put the school on the map with the first major sports program, which was followed by a women's program during the 1972-73 season. John Kiser (pictured) sank the first free throw in USF history.
