
No. 19 Bulls Fall To No. 6 Notre Dame 7-0

TAMPA- The University of South Florida women's tennis team returned to action on Friday when the Bulls traveled to South Bend, Indiana, to take on BIG EAST opponent Notre Dame. The Bulls fell to the Fighting Irish 7-0.
Freshman Ecaterina Vasenina and senior Jessica Zok started the day out for the Bulls in their No. 3 doubles match against Chrissie McGaffigan and Kristen Rafael. Vasenina and Zok lost eight straight games to McGaffigan and Rafael which gave Notre Dame their first win of the day.
Senior Lauren Shumate and redshirt sophomore Janette Bejlkova took on Cosmina Ciobanu and Shannon Matthews in the No. 2 doubles spot. Bejlkova and Shumate were down 6-4 before they would battle back and make it 6-6. Ciobanu and Matthews went on to win the next two games, though, which gave them the 8-6 win over Shumate and Bejlkova. With the win the Fighting Irish earned the 1-0 advantage heading into singles action.
No. 16 Junior Irene Rehberger and senior Melissa Koning took on No. 3 Kristy Frilling and Kali Krisik in the No. 1 doubles spot on Friday. Rehberger and Koning fell to Frilling and Krisik 8-6.
Koning kicked off singles competition for USF in her No. 2 singles match against Matthews. Koning was downed by Matthews 6-1, 6-2.
Zok took on Krisik in the No. 5 singles spot. Zok fell to Krisik in two straight sets 6-0, 6-4. That gave Notre Dame a commanding 3-0 lead over USF.
Vasenina competed against McGaffigan in the No. 3 singles spot. Both players battled it out in the first set and Vasenina ended up falling to McGaffigan 7-5. In the second set Vasenina lost to McGaffigan 6-0. With the win, Notre Dame earned the fourth and final point they needed to pick up the win over the Bulls.
Bejlkova competed in singles action for the Bulls in the No. 4 spot against Ciobanu. Despite keeping things close in the first set, Bejlkova would fall to Ciobanu 7-6. In the second set Bejlkova was up 4-1 before she had to retire from the match.
No. 41 Rehberger competed in the No. 1 singles spot against No. 18 Frilling. After falling 7-6 in the first set, Rehberger would battle back and win the second set 6-4. In the tiebreaker set, Rehberger lost to Frilling 1-0.
Guevara closed out singles competition for USF in her No. 6 singles match against Rafael. After losing the first set 7-5, Guevara fought back and won the second set 6-2. In the tiebreaker set, Guevara was downed by Rafael 1-0.
With the loss, USF falls to 10-6 on the season. The Bulls match against the Fighting Irish was their last match of the 2010 regular season. Next up for USF is the BIG EAST Championships which will be taking place at Notre Dame April 22-25.
