QUEENS, N.Y. - Home runs from
Ryan Lockwood and
Daniel Rockhold were not enough as the University of South Florida baseball team (22-25 Overall, 13-7 BIG EAST) lost 8-3 to St. John's (31-14, 13-7) Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
With the loss, the Bulls fall back into a tie for fourth place with the Red Storm.
Down 2-0 in the fifth, sophomore
Daniel Rockhold cut the Red Storm lead in half with a solo home run over the scoreboard in left field. Rockhold now has six round trippers on the season with five of them coming against BIG EAST opposition.
The Bulls quickly pulled evened in the following inning.
After stranding runners on third base twice in both the second and third innings, USF did not waste a
Ryan Lockwood leadoff triple.
Stephen Hunt sent a 0-1 offering deep enough to left field to score Lockwood from third. It was Hunt's team leading 41st RBI of the season.
USF struggled offensively with runners on base the rest of the day, going 1-for-14, and leaving seven runners on for the afternoon.
The tie ball game did not last for long as the Red Storm posted a four spot in the bottom of the sixth with three of those being credited to Bulls' reliever Kevin Quackenbush. Quackenbush (1-4) took the loss for the Bulls working 1.1 inning of relief giving up three runs, all earned on three hits.
Lockwood's solo homer to lead off the eighth inning, which easily cleared the 375' sign in right-center was the closest the Bulls could get to the Red Storm at 7-3. The homer was the second of the season for Lockwood.
Bulls' starter Andrew Barbosa left the game after just 1.1 innings due to a lower leg injury. He allowed two hits and no runs.
The Red Storm out hit the Bulls 13-5 on the afternoon with Lockwood accounting for two of the Bulls' base knocks. Four of the Bulls five hits were for extra bases.
The Bulls will look to take the series in tomorrow's finale with first pitch scheduled for noon first pitch.
Game Notes
Andrew Barbosa left the game due to injury after going just 1.1 innings, his shortest start of the season... In his previous 11 starts, Barbosa went 5.0 or more innings... Ryan Lockwood tripled for his second consecutive game... In two games, the Bulls have hit five home runs after hitting just 10 in the previous 18 BIG EAST games.
