CARBONDALE, Ill. - The University of Florida volleyball team after starting the weekend with a powerful offense, could not find their stride against Southern Illinois on Saturday night, as the Bulls lost in straight sets.
The Bulls fell to the Salukis on SIU's home court in the finale of the Saluki Invitational 25-15, 25-12, 25-16 to fall to 1-2 on the tournament.
USF started off well in the Saluki Invitational, taking straight sets from Southeast Missouri and then taking Mississippi State to five sets, falling just short, but the Bulls stumbled out of the gate against the Salukis, and could never recover.
The Bulls got outstanding matches throughout the weekend from senior Allie Boaz, who grew up in nearby Belleville, Ill., close enough to have a contingent of family and friends on hand to take in some Bulls' action in Carbondale.
Boaz did not disappoint as she recorded 33 kills throughout the tournament, good for a .309 hitting percentage earning All-Tournament honors.
Joining Boaz on the All-Tournament team was libero Janice Rivera, who led the team with 42 digs in the three matches, and was a major part of the Bulls defense throughout the weekend.
J'beria Davis was also impressive throughout the weekend, leading the team with 36 kills good for 3.27 per set, and also adding 23 digs on the weekend.
The stats for the match were not as pretty for the Bulls, as USF hit -.053 as a team, and got out-blocked by the salukis nine to five.
The wheels came off early for the Bulls, as they fell behind 7-3 in the first set, and after tying the game at seven on an attack error by SIU, the Bulls could not gain control and fell in set one 25-15.
Part of the way through the first set, the Bulls' outside hitter, Maija Strazdina, went up and recorded a kill, but landed awkwardly on her left knee. Strazdina who was leading the Bulls in kills during the match did not return, and will be evaluated further this week.
Following the slow start, and the loss of their teammate, USF came out flat in the second half and were never able to get anything going, mustering just 12 points. The Bulls went into the locker room down 2-0.
USF came out with a little more energy in the third frame, but it was too little too late, as SIU was in control the entire time, taking set No. 3, 25-16, and the match in straight set.
The Bulls will be back in action on Friday night, as they host the Hilton Garden Inn Tournament at USF. The Bulls will welcome in Jacksonville, Florida Atlantic and New Mexico for the weekend.
