TAMPA -The University of South Florida volleyball team opened up their home slate on Friday night in front of a raucous crowd, but the support was not enough, as the Bulls fell to New Mexico 3-1 in the Hilton Garden Inn Tournament.
The Bulls took the floor at the Corral for the first time in the 2010 season, in front of nearly 900 fans, and despite a hot start, could not keep the momentum going after set No. 1, dropping the next three to the Lobos.
USF took set one in impressive fashion, knocking off New Mexico 25-19, but struggled in the next three, dropping the final three frames 25-15, 25-16 and 25-13.
The Bulls are hosting New Mexico, Florida Atlantic and Jacksonville for their two-day home tournament, and after the tough loss to New Mexico, the Bulls return to action Saturday for a double header with the Owls and the Dolphins.
Senior Allie Boaz, coming off an impressive tournament at the Saluki Invitational last weekend, led the way again for the Bulls, collecting a team-high 10 kills, hitting .241 on the night while assisting on a pair of blocks.
With the loss of Maija Strazdina for the season with a knee injury, the Bulls looked to freshman Andrea Rodriguez Gomez as an offensive threat, as the rookie recorded nine kills on the night, hitting .267, while also assisting on a pair of block assists against the Lobos.
Janice Rivera picked up 19 digs on the night from the libero position, but the Bulls hit just .139 on the night as a team, compared to New Mexico, who hit .254 throughout the four sets.
The Bulls seemed energized by the home crowd, returning to the Corral for the first time in 2010. USF came out in the opening frame, and hit .400 as a team recording 16 kills and just four errors in 30 attacks as a team. The judges even halted play a few times because of how raucous the Corral was. USF harnessed the energy from the building and took set one, 25-19.
USF could not keep it going in the final three frames, hitting .094, .030 and .037 in sets two, three and four respectively, dropping the opener of the Hilton Garden Inn Tournament on Friday night.
The Bulls return to action on Saturday with matches against FAU and Jacksonville at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
