TAMPA - The University of South Florida volleyball team dropped their first match of their Saturday double-header to Florida Atlantic in straight sets.
The Bulls could not get their offense going against the Owls, and dropped their second match of the 2010 Hilton Garden Inn Tournament. USF fell to New Mexico in the opener on Friday night 3-0, and again failed to win a set in match No. 2 to the Owls.
With offensive powers Allie Boaz and Maija Strazdina out with knee injuries, the Bulls struggled to find their offensive groove in the loss. USF hit just .018 in the match, collecting 31 kills, compared to a .225 hitting percentage and 38 kills from the Owls.
FAU out-blocked the Bulls 9.0 to 5.0 in the match.
USF once again got an outstanding performance from libero Janice Rivera who collected 17 digs in the loss, and is averaging over fiver per set in the tournament.
Kayla Walton returned from knee surgery, and collected a season high seven kills in her 2010 debut. Freshman Andrea Rodriguez Gomez was a bright spot offensively for the Bulls, as the rookie recorded eight kills and hit .278 as an attacker in the match.
J'Beria Davis picked up five kills while adding 14 digs against the Owls.
The Bulls were able to keep things close in set one, despite hitting -.108 as team team in the opening frame. USF and FAU exchanged leads seven times throughout the set, but the Bulls could not close, falling 25-21.
The wheels came off a little bit for the Bulls in set No. 2, as they recorded just nine kills in 35 attacks, god for a .000 percentage, and did not lead at all during the entire set, with FAU taking it 25-19.
The Bulls came out of the locker room with a little more passion, but after exchanging leads with the Owls seven times again, the Bulls dropped the third set 25-20, getting outhit by Florida Atlantic, .229 to.158 in the decisive third set.
After consecutive three set losses to open the Hilton Garden Inn Tournament, the Bulls will look to respond in their finale against Jacksonville at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
Jacksonville defeated Florida Atlantic on Friday night, and fell to New Mexico on Saturday morning in straight sets.
The Dolphins enter the match at 5-7 on the year. Fans can join in the live chat for the match at GoUSFBulls.com, which includes live statistics of the tournament's finale.
