The No. 27 University of South Florida women's tennis team continued its West Coast swing and its string of difficult opponents with a 5-2 loss at No. 49 San Diego on Sunday. The Bulls are now 1-4 on the season but are yet to take on an opponent not ranked among the top 50 teams in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Bulls dropped all three matches in doubles play, but grabbed two singles wins and pushed two additional matches to three sets.
Ecaterina Vasenina picked up her third singles win of the season with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Josymar Escalona in the No. 2 spot. Janette Bejikova also improved to 3-2 in dual match play with a victory over Juliette Coupez at No. 4.
Irene Rehberger, ranked No. 24 by ITA, dropped her match after pushing it to a third set, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and Loreto Alonso Martinez couldn't build on her win vs. Southern California and fell to Laura Claus 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. Freshman Kate Parker is also still looking for her first dual match win after falling 6-3, 6-4 to Marite Raygada in the last singles spot.
In doubles play, ITA's No. 25-ranked tandem of Bejikova and Martinez dropped their match with Stephanie Hoffpauir and Coupez, 8-7 (4). Vasenina and Bonte also couldn't hang on in the No. 2 spot, suffering an 8-4 loss at the hands of Claus and Escalona. Rehberger and Parker battled to an 8-6 loss vs. Maja Sujica and Anna Depenau at No. 3.
The Bulls return to action on Feb. 19 with a 10 a.m. ET match at Virginia Commonwealth.
