Bulls Edged by No. 9 Georgetown, 61-55

TAMPA -   The University of South Florida men's basketball team took on the No.9 Georgetown Hoyas at home Saturday, losing 61-55.

The Bulls were led by forward Augustus Gilchrist, who finished with 22 points and seven rebounds.

The Hoyas were led by guard Chris Wright who finished with 25 points and four assists.

USF went on a 7-0 run midway through the first half to give themselves a 19-14 lead, then went on a 5-3 run to extend their lead to 24-17. However, the Hoyas went on a 9-0 run just before the half to claim the lead at 26-24. The Bulls went into the locker room trailing the Hoyas 28-26, behind Gilchrist who had 11 points and four rebounds.

In the first half, the Bulls trailed in field-goal percentages, only shooting 30.3 percent (10-of-33), compared to the Hoyas 50 percent (10-of-20), and 11.1 percent (1-of-9) from long-range, compared to Georgetown's 57.1 percent (4-of-7). However, in the first half the Bulls did score more points off turnovers, 9-0, and saw more points from their bench, 11-5.

From the 7:17 mark in the first half until the 11:46 mark in the second half, the only scorer for the Bulls was Gilchrist with eight points. To start the second half the Bulls tied it up off a Gilchrist jumper, however USF would not get that close again for the rest of the game. Midway through the second half the Hoyas went on a 7-0 run, extending their lead to 49-38.

With under a minute left in the game, the Bulls saw their best opportunity to inch closer to the Hoyas as Anthony Crater forced a turnover with the score being 56-51. The Bulls couldn't take advantage of the opportunity with Robertson missing the reverse lay-up and turned it back over to the Hoyas. Needing to foul, the Bulls fouled Georgetown's Chris Wright three times, with Wright knocking down all six free-throw attempts, securing the win for the Hoyas.

The Bulls shot 39 percent (23-of-59) on the night, compared to the Hoyas 51.2 percent (22-of-43). The Bulls only hit one three pointer for the game, which was likely a result of guard Shaun Noriega leaving the game early in the second half with a foot injury. The Bulls did however out-rebound the Hoyas 17-7 on offense, and outscore them 17-6 on second opportunity shots.

The Bulls go back on the road as they travel to DePaul on Feb. 26, then return for their home finale against Pittsburgh on Mar. 2.
