TAMPA - Tying the longest game in school history, the University of South Florida baseball team(1-5) gave up two runs in the top of the 16
th inning, falling 7-5 to Elon(5-2) Sunday afternoon at the USF Baseball Stadium.
With one out in the top of the 16
th, USF reliever
Andrew Loynaz walked Elon's Harry Austin then hit Eric Serra with a pitch. The runners advanced on a passed ball and then came around to score on Niko Fraser's single to right center. Fraser entered the at-bat 0-for-6 on the afternoon.
Down two runs, the Bulls we're retired in order in the bottom of the 16
th to end the game and drop the series.
In his USF debut, Loynaz suffered the loss while Elon's Mitch Conner picked up the win for the Phoenix.
Bulls starter Nick Gonzalez started strong retiring the first six batters he faced, striking out the side in the second inning.
Scoreless through 1.5 innings, USF struck first in the bottom of the second.
Following a two-out single by
Chad Taylor, freshman
James Ramsay snapped an 0-for-12 skid with a double into the right center field gap bringing Taylor around to score all the way from first.
Elon would get to Gonzalez in the third for a pair of unearned runs after an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt attempt. The throw went all way into the right field corner and allowed the runner to score on the play. A second run would score when Gonalez walked in a run later in the inning.
The Phoenix picked up another run as Gonzalez walked in a run. The walk was one of six that Gonzalez would issue on the day.
The inning would be the last for Gonzalez
as he went 4.0 innings on the afternoon striking out four.
In the fifth, Elon extended their advantage to 5-1 off of reliever
Doug Wagner on a two-run single by Grant McCoury. Wagner was replaced by sophomore
Adrian Puig. Puig retired the next batter and started a run of pitching 10.2 innings of scoreless ball by the USF bull pen.
The span was highlighted by 3.0 innings from senior
Junior Carlin, who came in from left field to strikeout four batters from the 11
th to 13
th inning. Carlin struck out the side in the 12
th.
USF used nine pitchers on the afternoon.
USF trailed 5-1 from the fifth inning until the eighth as the Bulls would pick up a run on Todd Brazeal's RBI single to cut the Elon advantage to, 5-2.
It would just be the start of it for Brazeal.
Saturday night's hero would come through in the ninth for the Bulls after giving the Bulls their first win of the season with his ninth inning heroics less than 24 hours earlier.
Entering the ninth down three runs, the Bulls inched closer as Carlin drove in Luis Llerena, who lead off the inning by being hit by a pitch, from third to make it 5-3. The hit was Carlin's third of the day.
After Sam Mende popped out for the second out of the inning, Daniel Rockhold singled to left to keep the inning going and on the very next pitch Brazeal sent liner into the gap in left that skipped by both the centerfielder and leftfielder and rolled all the way to the wall allowing both Carlin and pinch runner Anthony Diaz to score.
On the day, USF outhit Elon, 15-9, but stranded 13 base runners.
USF won't have to wait long to try to get on track as they will have their first mid-week game of the season. The Bulls will take on No. 20 Miami on Tuesday, March 1 at Steinbrenner Field. The game is first game of the 2011 Florida Four. USF will take on Miami in the first game starting at 4 p.m. and will be followed by Florida State against Florida.
