TAMPA - Another solid pitching performance on the mound from senior RHP
Kyle Eastham and a five-run fourth inning propelled the University of South Florida baseball team(6-7) to a 7-4 win over visiting Evansville Friday night at the USF Baseball Stadium.
USF took a 1-0 advantage on an unearned run in the bottom of the second but it would not last long as Evansville answered with an unearned run of their own in the top of the third inning.
With the score tied at one a piece, USF broke the game open with a five spot in the fourth inning.
Junior
Todd Brazeal led the inning off with a leadoff double off the wall in left and then came around to score on freshman
James Ramsay double off the wall in right. With the hit and the run driven in, Ramsay has now hit safely and driven in a run in eight straight games.
The Bulls weren't done.
With one down, Ramsay would touch home plate on an RBI single by
Chad Taylor through the left side.
Sophomore
Jimmy Falla followed Taylor with an infield single to put two on for junior
Andrew Longley. The Bulls backstop snapped an 0-for-8 skid with his first home run of the season that fought through a stiff breeze blowing in from left to cap off the inning and give the Bulls a 6-1 lead.
USF put the first two on in the bottom of the fifth and tacked on a run with an RBI groundout by Ramsay. The multi-RBI night is the second of the season.
With plenty of run support, Eastham delivered his second consecutive solid start to pick up his second win of the season. Eastham worked 6.0 innings, allowing two runs, both unearned. He scattered four hits, walked two and struck out four. At one point, Eastham retired seven straight batters before giving up a bunt single with two down in the third.
Evansville cut the Bulls lead to 7-4 with an unearned run in the sixth off Eastham and a two-run homer by Mark Oesterle in the eighth off reliever
Adrian Puig.
Senior closer
Kevin Quackenbush picked up his second save in as many chances by working a perfect ninth, striking out the final batter of the game. Quackenbush has not allowed a run in his last five appearances.
Offensively, the Bulls out hit the Purple Aces, 10-8. Seven different Bulls recorded a hit led by Brazeal, Mende and Taylor who each had two hits apiece. The multi-hit game for Brazeal is his fifth of the season and 50
th of his career.
The Bulls and Purple Aces will wrap up their three game set with a doubleheader starting at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at the USF Baseball Stadium. Senior RHP
Randy Fontanez will get the start in Game 1 while freshman LHP Nick Gonzalez will be on the bump in Game 2.
