TAMPA -Despite three hits and two runs driven in by sophomore Chad Taylor, the University of South Florida baseball team (6-9) dropped a 6-4 decision in Game 2 of the Saturday doubleheader at the USF Baseball Stadium.
After being held scoreless in Game 1, USF struck first in Game 2.
With one out in the fourth inning, junior Sam Mende singled then stole second. On the next pitch, he would score standing up on the single by senior Junior Carlin.
Carlin came around to score on an RBI Triple by Taylor.
Evansville would cut the Bulls lead in half with a run in the fifth, but USF pushed their lead to two thanks to a RBI double by Todd Brazeal.
Evansville finally got to Bulls starter Nick Gonzalez, who did a nice job of keeping the Purple Aces line-up off balance prior to the fifth and six innings.
The sixth inning was the last for Gonzalez as he left the game after 6.0 innings of work, scattering five hits and striking out four. All three runs he allowed were earned.
Despite giving up the game tying runs in the fifth, Gonzalez would be in line for the win as Taylor gave the Bulls the lead with an RBI single to center to score James Ramsay.
That was all the offense the Bulls could muster and the following inning Evansville scored two off of Bulls reliever Zack Pietryk, to give them a 5-4 lead. In six prior appearances, Pietrzyk had not allowed a run.
Evansville tacked on an insurance run in the eighth to give the game its final outcome.
The Bulls were outhit on the night, 10-9, led by Taylor's three hits and Mende's two hits.
Evansville's Jake Nauman worked three innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win for the Purple Aces.
Following this weekend, USF will travel to Orlando to take on UCF on Tuesday, March 15 in a game that will be aired on Bright House Sports Network. The Bulls will then leave home for the first time during their non-conference weekends for a split four-game series with Bethune-Cookman on March 17-20. The first two games of the series will be in Daytona and the final two games will be in Tampa. USF will not leave the state of Florida during the non-conference portion of their schedule.
