Up Next For the Bulls: Game 31: Rutgers | April 10 | 1 p.m. | USF Baseball Stadium |
|
TAMPA, Fla.- It was an uphill battle from the start for the University of South Florida Baseball team Saturday night as the Bulls fell to its Big East foe Rutgers in game two of the weekend series, 11-6.
Senior
Kyle Eastham didn't bring his best stuff to the mound in the contest, surrendering seven runs through five innings, four of which came in the first. He struck out five and gave up eight while walking two.
This comes just after Bulls ace
Randy Fontanez's eight-inning, ten strikeout performance in which he allowed only three hits and one unearned run.
Rutgers was determined to get something going in the weekend series after being virtually shut down by Fontanez and USF's bullpen the previous night.
The Bulls offense didn't help matters until the fifth inning when outfielder
Junior Carlin singled up the middle to begin a two-run inning. This was the first of three straight hits in the inning, all of which came with two outs. First baseman
Todd Brazeal drove in Carlin and shortstop
Sam Mende with a double before the brief rally came to an end. Brazeal added an RBI single in the seventh to give him 23 on the year, which leads the team. He was two-for-four with three RBI and a run scored.
Unfortunately, Rutgers had already built up a six-run lead before the Bulls put their first two runs on the board and continued to tack on runs after the fifth. Every time the Bulls started to inch their way back in the game, Rutgers responded the following inning and eventually put the nail in the coffin.
While quality pitching has been a strong point for the team this season, the staff struggled to put hitters away as the offense got off to a slow start, not putting any runs on the board until the fifth inning.
Five different players had two or more hits for the Bulls who racked up 13 hits on the night in a losing effort. However nine runners were also left stranded in the game.
"As a team we didn't do a very good job," said a disappointed Coach Prado after the loss. "Yeah, we hit the ball when it didn't mean anything. Just, when you start off and you don't compete on the mound, that's what happens. We didn't have one guy that competed on the mound today."
With his single in the fifth, Carlin extended his hitting streak to ten games. He was one-for-three in the game and scored one run before leaving early.
The Bulls will look to take the series on Sunday afternoon with a 1 p.m. start in the rubber match.
