Up Next For the Bulls: Game 32: Stetson | April 12 | 6:30 p.m. | Deland, Fla. |
|
TAMPA, Fla.- Jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, the University of South Florida baseball team (15-16, 5-4) never looked back cruising to a 7-3 victory Sunday afternoon at the USF Baseball Stadium to take the weekend series from Rutgers.
The Bulls led from the outset, taking an 4-0 lead highlighted by a two-run single by
Todd Brazeal in the first frame.
Senior
Jonathan Koscso led the Bulls in a 14 hit effort on the day collecting three hits, reaching base five times. Koscso was one of five Bulls to collect multiple hits on the day as
Junior Carlin,
Jimmy Falla,
Alex Mendez and
Chad Taylor collected two hits apiece.
12 of the Bulls 14 hits came against Rutgers starter Nathan Roe, who lasted 4.1 in the loss.
Battling shaky control from the beginning, Junior
Matt Reed battled to pick up his second win of the season. The lefty worked 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, walking four. Of his 98 pitches, 56 found the strike zone but Reed consistently buckled down, making timely pitches to hold the Rutgers line-up in check and limit an real damage.
Rutgers did all of their damage against Reed in the second thanks to a two-run single by Pat Sweeney with the bases loaded. Rutgers loaded the bases again with one out in inning but Reed limited the damage by striking out Nick Favatella swinging and then getting Michael Lang to ground out to second to end the threat.
An RBI ground-out by
Chad Taylor in the fifth extended the Bulls lead to 5-2 in. USF would wrap up their scoring in the fifth with a sacrifice fly by
Andrew Longley and an RBI single by Koscso through the left side.
Rutgers would push across their third and final run of the game in ninth off reliever
Jimmy Moran and put runners on the corner with two-outs but senior closer
Kevin Quackenbush shut the door recording a one-out save fanning the only batter he faced for his sixth save in seven opportunities.
Following the win, USF will make the trip to Deland for a mid-week clash against Stetson on April 12 before heading to South Orange, NJ for a three-game set at Seton Hall starting on Friday, April 15.
Game Notes
Junior Carlin extended his hit streak to 11 games with two hits... Today was the first multi-hit game of the streak... Koscso has reached base safely in 30 of 31 games this season , including 27 straight...
Todd Brazeal has five runs driven in over his last two games... Just one USF starter did not have a hit.
