SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.- The University of South Florida softball team's 10-game winning streak came to an end with a 3-1 loss to Seton Hall in game one of the three-game set on Friday.
The loss was the first in conference play for USF (27-16, 7-1) on the year, and the first loss since falling 9-5 to Oklahoma State on March 19.
The Bulls could not keep the streak alive despite getting a season-high nine strikeouts from sophomore pitcher Lindsey Richardson who pitched the complete 6.0 innings, allowing the three runs, none earned on just five hits.
Laura Fountain kept her hot bat going as she reached base three times in the loss, going 2-for-2 from the dish including a double.
Senior Erin Bly drove in the only run of the game for the Bulls, scoring Janine Richardson who was 1-for-4 in the game. Ashli Goff collected a pair of hits as well, her 10th multi-hit performance of the year.
The game fit the definition of a pitcher's duel early on as zeros spanned the scoreboard throughout the first five frames.
It wasn't until the top of the sixth that either offense was able to push across a run.
With one out in the top of the sixth, Janine Richardson placed a bloop single into right fieldand was able to steal second to advance into scoring position. A strikeout by Stephanie Medina brought the red-hot Fountain to the plate, and the junior earned a four-pitch walk. Erin Bly came in to pinch-hit for Kelly McCarver and ripped a single through the right side scoring Richardson from second to give the Bulls the first run of the game.
The Bulls, who entered the game with a 21-2 record when scoring first and a perfect 19-0 mark when leading after six, looked to be in prime position to extend their 10-game winning streak, but the Pirates would not quit.
A single by Reed gave Seton Hall a base-runner to begin the inning, and an error by Medina allowed the second batter to reach to spark the rally. A flyout allowed Reed to tag and move to third before a single to right by Schillizzi scored Reed and knotted the game at 1-1. The very next batter was Kirby Groves who ripped a Richardson pitch over the left-field wall for the go-ahead two-run home run, and the 3-1 lead heading to the seventh.
The Bulls got a pair of runners on in the seventh but were unable to score as they fell to the Pirates 3-1 to end the 10-game winning streak.
