LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of South Florida baseball team (18-19, 7-6) could not hold a late 3-1 lead as Louisville (21-16, 7-6) scored five times in the bottom of the seventh, holding on for a 6-4 win over the Bulls Thursday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Louisville struck first on an RBI single by Ryan Wright off Bulls starter
Randy Fontanez to put the Cardinals on top after one inning of play.
From there, Fontanez and Louisville's Derek Self would take control as Self retired the first 12 batters he faced and Fontanez retired 12 straight of his own following a one-out walk to Stewart James with two outs in the first inning.
Fontanez would keep the Louisville advantage at 1-0 until the Bulls bats finally solved Self in the sixth.
Junior Carlin extended his hit streak to 17 games with a single to right to put runners on first and second with one down for
Sam Mende. Mende would deliver an RBI single to left, scoring
Jonathan Koscso to even the game at one.
On the very next pitch,
James Ramsay gave the Bulls the lead with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Carlin from third.
USF extended their lead to 3-1 on an RBI single by Carlin in the seventh but Louisville would answer.
Fontanez returned for the seventh but would not end it after allowing four of the first five batters in the inning to reach as Louisville erupted for five runs to take a 6-3 lead, one they would not relinquish.
Fontanez would leave after 6.1 innings, allowing five runs, all earned, on seven hits. He struck out five on the day but walked three, ultimately suffering his first loss in BIG EAST play. The start was his shortest in BIG EAST play.
The Bulls cut into the Cardinals' advantage in the eighth on
Daniel Rockhold's RBI groundout scoring Ramsay, who led off the inning with his second triple of the season.
Louisville reliever Travis Tingle picked up the win for Cards, working 1.1 innings while closer Tony Zych worked a perfect ninth to pick up his 10
th save.
The Bulls and Cardinals will do it again Friday evening with another 6 p.m. start at Jim Patterson Stadium. Senior RHP
