USF Comes Up On Short End In Nail-Biter
September 16, 2011 | Women's Soccer
By TOM ZEBOLD USF Senior Writer TAMPA – Thursday's USF-West Virginia matchup was just like it usually is – close. The women's soccer teams took a 1-1 tie into a second overtime period until West Virginia's Blake Miller made good on a penalty kick that gave the Mountaineers a comeback victory. Both programs played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie and a 1-0 result last season, and this one was destined for a similar finish. The Bulls (4-3-1) outshot West Virginia, 9-1, in the first half and had the momentum from the opening whistle. “It was an excellent start, probably the best start that we've had of the season,” USF head coach Denise Schilte-Brown said. “The girls mentally, physically, technically, tactically were really ready for this game and I thought they showed it in the first five minutes.” USF broke through first with Chelsea Klotz getting a touch pass from Anne Vikre and finessing one into the net 60 minutes into the game. “We were in control of our own fate and scored that goal, which I thought was gaining great momentum for us,” Schilte-Brown said. West Virginia answered back with less than four minutes remaining in regulation off a corner kick that Drea Barklage put in. The Mountaineers (4-4) had 11 corner kicks in the game. “West Virginia is a good team that had a game plan, and they stuck to it and eventually were able to execute a corner,” Schilte-Brown said. USF will look to bounce back Sunday with a 1 p.m. road game at Pittsburgh, the Bulls' second Big East contest of the season.
