WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Bulls' efficient offense as of late ran into trouble on the road Saturday afternoon.
USF men's basketball committed 17 turnovers while Augustus Gilchrist was the lone Bull in double figures with 15 points in a 75-45 loss at No. 14 Georgetown. The Bulls (13-10, 6-4) had only 15 points at the break and failed to catch up with the Hoyas, who put up 52 points in the second half.
"We just got real frustrated offensively," USF head coach Stan Heath said. "The more we couldn't score, the more we got frustrated. Then all the sudden the avalanche opened up."
USF's 15 points at the half were a season low after going more than 10 minutes with a point. The Bulls took a 5-4 lead on a layup from Ron Anderson Jr. with 15:07 remaining and didn't score again until Gilchrist's 3-pointer with 4:12 left before the break.
"Today just wasn't our day," Heath said. "I don't know what it was. This wasn't our typical team."
Damage was hardly done by the Hoyas, however, who scored only 14 points during the Bulls' drought and went into the half with a modest 23-15 lead in a matchup of the Big East's top two scoring defenses.
What led to the Bulls' offensive struggles was a total of 11 turnovers and four assists. Gilchrist carried the team into the break with nine points. USF went 6-for-23 from the field.
The game slipped away from the Bulls quickly in the second half when Georgetown opened with a 16-4 run and remained well ahead the rest of the way. Five different Hoyas finished in double figures, led by Henry Sims' 13 points.
"They have so many weapons," Heath said. "Sometimes you just key in on (Jason) Clark and (Hollis) Thompson, and yet some of those other guys can hurt you as well."
The Bulls will look to regroup in Tampa 7 p.m. Wednesday when they host Pittsburgh at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
