TAMPA -  Rack up another shutout for the No. 24 University of South Florida softball team.

Pitchers Sam Greiner and Sara Nevins combined to toss the Bulls' fifth consecutive shutout Wednesday night at the USF Softball Stadium, edging USF (20-4 overall) past Canisius 1-0 for the team's 20th win of the season.

Greiner and Nevins combined to strike out 10 Golden Griffins, and scattered a combined five hits in a game that was scoreless until the fifth inning.

"Sammy did an unbelievable job," head coach Ken Eriksen said. "She made pitches for us, and then Nevins came in and did a great job of getting us through the rest of the way. Our staff kept us in there and gave us a chance to win the ball game."

Greiner left after four-plus innings of work, giving up just four hits and striking out four. Nevins collected the final nine outs, striking out six to grab her tenth win of the season.

The Bulls put runners on in three of the first four innings, but couldn't bring one home until the fifth.

Janine Richardson's sharp grounder with two outs ate up Katie Lancellotti at shortstop, allowing Kourtney Salvarola to cross home with the only run of the game. None of the Bulls' other 12 baserunners would score, as USF hit the ball sharply, but right at the defense all evening.

"We talked about how you can't guarantee a win by working hard, but you'll be in the game," Eriksen said. "That was a perfect example today. The team played two sides of the ball, and worked hard. We hit balls at them and put ourselves in position to score a lot of runs."

Senior outfielder Gina Kafalas collected three hits in four at bats, while junior Kenshyra Jackson and freshman D'Anna Devine each had two.

Nevins' streak of 19 consecutive innings without allowing a hit ended when a popup in the middle of the infield landed harmlessly for a single with two outs in the seventh inning. However, the team's streak for consecutive innings without an earned run allowed was extended to 37.
