TAMPA -Senior pitcher Andrew Barbosa pitched a shutout on Friday night.
USF (13-6, 0-0) got the victory over Lafayette, 5-0, before a crowd of 891 at USF baseball complex.
"I'm proud of our guys," said head coach Lelo Prado. "We were able to get another win tonight."
Kyle Teaf gave USF an early 1-0 lead on a two out RBI-single to score Matt Hart.
The Bulls were able to get their bats going again in the bottom of the third inning. James Ramsay and Todd Brazeal both hit RBI-singles and Jimmy Falla batted in Ramsay to give the Bulls a 4-0 lead.
Luis Llerena hit a stand-up double and Alex Mendez drove him home on a single to extend the Bulls lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Starting pitcher Andrew Barbosa pitched six innings allowing three hit, no runs and four strikeouts. Barbosa (2-2) retired 10 batters in a row.
Junior pitcher Steven Leasure picked up the save pitching three innings allowing two hits, one run and four strikeouts.
"Barbosa and Leasure both pitched well for us on the mound tonight," said Prado
Lafayette threatened in the top of the ninth inning with back-to-back singles by Andrew Ruck and Kevin Casey, but Leasure struck out Bobby Fargnoli to end the threat and seal the win for USF.
The Bulls will face Lafayette for the second game of the three-game series at 6 p.m. on Saturday at USF baseball complex.
